Adam Jones' Super Bass

You may not want to turn it up to more than 1 or 2 o'clock till you get more speakers. Just to be on the safe side. No reason to blow a speaker. ...... The pick hand control you get with a amp with no master is why these are my favorite amps. No master volume amp has done this for me like this.

It is harder to control at first.
But well worth it.

Turning up the volume just kind of changes the range of distortion you can get with you pick hand. It well get to a point where it does not get much louder. Just more compressed and more harmonics. For me a lot of the great sounds come around the 10/11 o'clock range.

All the controls are very interactive. ... If you change one thing you may need to fine tune others. This well become second nature as you get to know the amp.
You well be able to get more use of the presence and treble as you turn it up. The presence also effect gain as you turn it up. The low end well start coming out also as you turn up the master. The voicing ~ is the way everything was voiced back then. Lots of bass did not happen for a long time after that for most people.

This why you add a master volume amp to this to get a good solid low end and extra harmonics with all the roar that comes from the NMV amp. I feel fine with one or the other. But like both together best.

..... and congratulation on your new amp.
Hope she makes you happy.

I just put an EQ in front and it gets the amp firing up A LOT. Was very surprisedwith the break up differences...
I get no sound from patching the channels or using the low input of the right channel? the high input has sound though. any idea here?

You could try cleaning the jack ? That does it most of the time. I do not recommend opening the amp if you do not know the safety stuff. It has enough juice in it unplugged to kill you. Try switching out the preamp tubes one at a time ?

If you are bring it in to have the power tubes biased have them look at it.

I use the bright hi almost all the time .... just like everyone else.

What do you think of the amp ?

I also can't get any sound out of any of the channels (hi or low) unless I turn both volumes up is that normal?

as for the sound I haven't got it cranked still yet - waiting to build or buy a cab. volume up a bit with the EQ gets nice dirty, thick but clear. I think its pretty articulate.. I really like it. I don't really know how to explain it though ...

I'm not really confident enough to open the amp and fiddle with things at the moment.

"I also can't get any sound out of any of the channels (hi or low) unless I turn both volumes up is that normal?"

No that is not normal. Between that and all the inputs not working it sounds like it has been mod or has a problem.

You may consider having someone look at it ? Or have one of the people at Rig Talk mod it for you ? They would fix the problem at the same time.

A lot of the old amps have bad mod (more bad than good) done to them. These are pretty easy to remove and put back to normal in most cases.

Maybe you like it the way it is and do not want anything changed ?

"nice dirty, thick but clear. I think its pretty articulate" ...That is the sound of these amps. They put out what you put in.

When you have the tubes biased (you want to do this every time you switch out the power tubes for the best sound and wear on the tubes) have them check it out. Make sure they understand what the strange behavior is.

I'm going to get it looked at, serviced, valves replaced etc, and get the amp back to default if it has been modified.
the seller didn't mention any of this!

The seller may not know what they are doing at all. I do not believe this is the case. But it could be. I believe you said you got it real cheap. That may be part of it.

Anyway It does work and that is a good sign they did not mess with the power amp. The preamp is where they do most of the mods. The old amps like the old cars are more easy to work on most of the time.

Make sure you get all the parts back. Write down or take pictures of the tubes. I have seen people say the tubes were bad and I replaced them all. Then they go sell the vintage tubes to someone else.

Make sure they know this up front about wanting all the original parts back. If you ask after you have no leg to stand on. Most of the stuff is just thrown out and it could be to late. .... and you well be mad about nothing.

Make sure you get some one around that has a good reputation with guitar amps if you can.
Do not just get anyone, there are a lot of hacks around. I have seen work by someone that talked the talk and there work was sub par.
The good thing is once it is serviced it should be the way it should be.

Most people are honest but you always need to watch out.

It still is a classic Marshall and that is about as cool as it gets.

i emailed the seller asking what was up and he said he didn't mod the amp and thought the previous seller didn't either
he told me volume two was pre amp and volume one power.
anyway will be taking it to a very reputable tech soon, and also bought a 2x12, with a uk 25watt greenback and a heritage g12h 30watt greenback. going to try 2 vintage 30s and a v30/t75 combination. i think i will probably sell the 75s though. or run at 50w and use the speakers i got with the cab
the cab sounds amazing. so good!
also i do get sound from patching the channels.

That is great.

You do know that you do not add the wattage in a multi speaker cab.
The way to find the wattage is to multiply the (number of speakers) by the lowest watt speaker.

As in a 4x12 with (2x75 and 2x25) the wattage would be 4x25 or 100.

"he told me volume two was pre amp and volume one power."

Confused me also.

Yep I know all about the wattage with the speakers!
The amp guts are being cleaned up, the insides were dirty and it had been modified, luckily nothing too extreme the tech is restoring it to original specs... I am getting a PPIMV installed that is completely bypassed when set to 10 so I have both master and no master volume, as I am too poor to get a thd hotplate etc :gethim:
The amp is going to be installed and biased with the EL34.

Glad to hear this is moving forward for you. I was thinking about it the other day. You well let us know how she goes ?

I will. I'll post pics as well. Should be picking the amp up tomorrow

The best amp I have used so far. I am that happy with it
I dunno if you're into them, but it nails The Melvins' Stoner Witch album I was jamming today and we played the songs Roadbull and At the Stake. To get that tone all I was doing was putting the volume 10 and adjusting the master. I didn't really expect that but wow, I'm loving it .
The amp is kinda fizzy at low volumes, but that is expected. That all goes away when the power vavles open up. They're Winged C EL34s
Pics will come soon

I practiced in the same place as them for sometime around the mid 90's (Naft). I helped Buzz clean all his cabs before they hit the road.

Make sure you try it the other way. Dime the master and turn up the other one to the drive you like.

There is something magical about that style amp.
Everyone should have one.

I haven't got the chance to crank it that way yet
I had the master on 4. The fizz goes away at 2.
That is really cool hanging around the melvins  I've only see them play a show here, are you still a fan?
edit: I just dimed the volume to 10 (only played a for about a minute!!!). The speakers pushing so much air lol, I wonder how much watts it puts out like that. It does compress a lot as you said a while ago. It is not nasty in the treble like I said a couple of pages back. That does not bother me anymore.

Ya ~ those guys were always alright with me. People are people. Buzz does not pretend to be anything else. I have spent plenty of time around a number of people who are known. Personally I feel stupid dropping names. But it is strange to look up and see 20 or 30 celebrity's watching what you are doing.

My favorite thing about these amps is how much control you have just with your hands. Nothing like that roar. Using the guitar volume is a whole other thing that comes into play.

Ive never had an amp with foot switchable clean etc. I always use my guitar volume. The super bass does it better then any other amp I've had or used. The dynamics are the my 2nd favourite part of the amp. The roar of the amp is huge, and is my favourite part of the amp. It is a great feeling playing with it and the speakers pushing so much air. The volume is addicting. I need to turn it down though I don't want the ear damage.

towel is there because it is missing a corner cover and has a screw coming out. waiting for a part in the mail to fix that up.
ps: what are you doing to have 20-30 people watching what you're doing?

I have been at practice many time to turn around well playing to see that many in the room checking out what we were doing. Like I said people are people. My life has been strange that way ... I have been around "celebrity's" a lot.

The amp looks killer.
