Damn! What a mega-dose of nostalgia here!! I went to G.I.T. in the spring of 89. The Mr. Big album was in the can - but not released until June of that year. The Electric Fence (Gilbert, Russ Parrish, Eric Martin) played a closed doors concert for the incoming class and did a slow-grind rendition of Paula Abdul's 'Hit and Run.' Paul invited the entire school to come to the video shoot for this video. They shot it at 'The Palace' just off Hollywood Blvd on Vine. I was actually in the crowd somewhere - but I'm sure any clip with the back of my head wound up on the cutting room floor. They just hit the click track and plowed straight through the song about 8 - 10 times with about 3 - 4 cameras moving all over the room.
I am pretty sure Paul was still using the ADA's during the 1st Mr. Big album - I know Bruce was still using them, cause I actually got to tech for Bruce one night at the Troubador when his regular tech was out with another band. This was before 'The Scream' and Bruce, Scott and John were still using the name Racer-X with a short lived front man who's name I honestly don't remember. (Jamie something??) Anyway, Bruce played that show with his ADA MP-1 feeding a backline of Ampeg heads set crystal clean driving half a dozen Carvin 4x12s. He had me blast a few big power chords right after sound check so he could hear it in the back of the room. I'm pretty sure I pissed myself a little.
That night before the show started, I remember hanging out with the band and all their girlfriends upstairs at the Troubador dressing room drinking a beer and being so completely nervous / star-struck that I didn't even know what to say. Paul was there with his then girlfriend - the 'assistant' from his REH video. After the show, Bruce invited me to tag along way up north to the valley where either John Alderete or Scott Travis lived for an after-party. Keep in mind, I was barely 22, star-struck, nervous as F, and did NOT know my way around LA. It was pretty late after load out, and I thought: man, I haven't done or said anything too stoopid yet - maybe just thank Bruce and say I gotta be up early tomorrow rather than tag along and run the risk of someone at the party saying "Who the F*ck is this and what is HE doing here???" So I tapped out on the after-party!!! A 'cautious' move I will regret til the day I die!
