so
who the fuck is it.

This.

The guy "NEVER takes on repairs" for stuff he built? What kind of builder can't work on his own products?
He said that he just doesn't have the time (or the staff) to do repairs on out-of-warranty products, which is totally understandable in 'this' economy. I gave him the number of my tech as a possible source to help with the overflow.

I think some are under the impression that the item is an amp... It is not. It is a singular effects device. It does NOT take 3 months to replace a 1 x cooked IC and a handful of capacitors... No way!

i agree...

so who is it? :poke:
Revealing his name would be unethical. I opened the this topic seeking advice on how to get the unit back? I was not, nor am I now seeking to defame his character. Sometimes things don't go as planned, and this could be one of those situations... I don't know? He is an affable individual, and is held in very high regard in the music community. I'm just trying to resolve this issue in the most civilized and professional manner possible.

Update:
I spoke with the builder on Friday 8/5/2013 to let him know that FedEx would be picking up my property on 4/8/2013 (today). I was contacted this evening by FedEx that the package was not ready to be picked up. :bash:

"I'm leeeeeaving...on a jet plane, dont know when I'll be back again..."

Dude you have GOT to be kidding. All of that, and then you still don't get it back. And then it's FEDEX that calls to say they didn't get it, NOT the tech/builder?

I'm sitting here almost pissed off for you. Bullshit.

I called FedEx to get more info, and they said that the driver was told by (I'm so ready to drop this guys name) that it's not ready to be shipped.

I'm so ------- pissed off right now! Does this guy think I'm not going to pursue him over this? He expressed several times to me how much he loves this particular circuit, and that it was the first circuit he ever designed. This, and the fact that I'm experiencing resistance makes me think that he doesn't want to send it back. He designed it, so why wouldn't he just build a new one? I know one of the Panasonic chips is no-longer available, so that may have something to do with it, I don't know?

3 months to replace 1 x IC and some electrolytic caps? Give me a break! The IC's are plug-in type, so he didn't have to remove and re-solder it. I did a Nippon electrolytic recap on an SP-77 preamp last Friday which took 2 hours to complete from start to finish.

Stay tuned...

sleuth time

california
builder of effects
busy pushing new products out the door
panasonic is a delay chip so delay or chorus unit

i'm guessing fuller

What, he didn't follow through? I thought he was 'a class act?'

If you do get it back I would be checking the compenents to make sure he didn't swap anything out like the chip or anything else that is not being made anymore.

After a full day on the phone and the help of an associate in Cali, my delay is on its way back! :)

Seriously though, congrats on finally getting your delay back.

Which sums-up life in general...

Thanks man! It's actually a chorus, but it's designated as a delay.

I debated as to whether I should post an update to this, as this type of thing usually ends-up as fodder for trolls... I've decided to move forward with this update in an effort to help anyone who may be considering sending their vintage gear to ADA. This is not meant to defame anyone, as the comments made here by me are 100% accurate. I cannot vouch for comments made by '62SG'.

After telling him that I would be at his shop with local law enforcement, I did finally got my STD-1 delay back. The name of the technician that I shipped it to for repairs is David Tarnowski. After having the STD-1 in his possession for nearly 5 months, the unit was NOT functional when I received it. Not only did he not repair it properly; he also removed every original Texas Instruments TL072 op-amps, and replaced them with Chinese made aftermarket TL072 op-amps! I tested every one of the Texas Instruments TL072 op-amps prior to sending it to ADA, and every one of those op-amps were viable. I had 7 x NOS TL072's in my personal inventory, so I was able to get it back to stock. I ended-up sending it to Rick Hamel of SIB in San Diego who had it full operational in less than 1 week. Thank you Rick! Rick has been repairing my gear for the last 2 years, and is IMO one of the best there is. Since this was an ADA unit, I thought it would be best to send it to the source... I was wrong!

I'm not the only one he has pulled this shit on... From Huge Racks Forum:

"Unfortunately I had a similar bad experience with Tarnowski. Once during a conversation with him I mentioned that I had several original Seamoon pedals in my collection, and he asked if I could send them to him so he could look at them. He told me he was interested in reissuing them. He held onto my pedals for more than a year (he originally told me he only needed them for a month), and when I finally got them back I noticed that several of them had been modified and had parts replaced. He told me he "improved" them, but they sounded worse and lost much of their unique personality. Of course they also lost much of their collectible value since they were no longer original. When I told him I was upset, he offered to give me a deal on an ADA Flanger and Final Phase. I decided to take him up on it and never heard back from him again..."

Ouch

That is absolutely terrible. Glad you had a few backup opamps at hand to replace. Sad when things like this happen.

That's bullshit. Defame away. If this guy is modding people's gear (or perhaps better described as stealing original components from people's gear) without their permission, it needs to be spread around so others don't get burned.

I was all excited too! To have the guy who designed and built it doing the repairs was a big-deal to me. I don't know what's going on with some people, but it seems like you just can't rely on anyone. I read these stories about talented people like Mark Cameron and Jon Wilder, and I think about how successful these guys could be... They are their own worst enemies. Some people for whatever reason just don't seem to care? It boggles the mind!

What a dick. You handled it much more patiently than I would have. :D
