You are using a real Echoplex after the Mad Professor pedal?

Yes! EP-3 they're the best! It's a huge part of all the early VH recordings..

hot diggity dog that was money!

i'd buy an album to hear your razor sharp technique and interesting tones over 10 sloppy repetitive yngwies and george lynch cds

Al, your playing is phenomenal. I always look forward to your clips, especially your original stuff...

Steve

Sounds killer... I like how you play a little without the rhythm section because I think it showcases something that I think a lot of people miss in that the guitar tone sounds pretty OK all by itself but drop it in a mix and it's perfecto. Way too many players set up as if guitar isn't meant to be in a mix. Big bass, rolled off top end, insufficient mids...

It sounds awesome and maybe even better than your MXR 5150 clip. I would love to hear what the CMATMODS Brownie overdrive would sound like in your hands.

I hear that softness and tiny compression it adds. Having owned one since the late 80's...it has an unmistakable sound. A few years ago I snagged a Badgerplex EP pedal which sounds fantastic as well.

Your clips are always incredible and entertaining.

Yes always interested in solo'd guitar and 'in the mix' guitar, totally agree with you on Big bass, rolled off top end, insufficient mids thing and gain levels!

The MXR is a bit more compressed and a little fizzier, but I recently used one for a live gig into a clean amp and got pretty good results! both different flavors..

The EP-3 is very subtle, it doesn't really add gain like people think, btw the Dunlop echoplex is pretty good at emulating the EP-3 as well

You've mastered the Master!

Btw, Have you ever met Ed? I'm just wondering what his perception is of you? Any good stories?? Someone of your ability and talent cannot fly under the VH radar. I would hope he would be totally flattered and not be a jerk.

Love your vids man!

Oh yeah, how could I forget the high gain... agreed.

By the way, I had an instrumental band that was playing locally (OC area) around 87 or so and you were the only other guy I was aware of who was also doing it so went to see you guys at a place off the 57 frwy (forget the name, too many years gone by). I think you guys were called Stratosphere or something similar?

Just a quick hand shake and hello, met him at the Whiskey in Hollywood at a TOTO show, early 90's, my guess is he doesn't care for imitators or tribute bands but I could be wrong..also met Jeff Beck the same night, talked to him for a bit very nice down to earth guy!

Yeah, I lost track of time. Would have been around 90. Was a good show. Did you guys record anything back then? I had wondered what you were doing these days, good to see you continued to hone your craft.

Yes recorded most of my songs on a 4 track Cassette recorder back then! some video as well, our biggest gig was opening for Holdsworth at the Roxy in Hollywood, most of the material ended up on my solo Cd's some years later: Radiation Man, Freedom To Burn and Riffage

Here's one of the 4-track cassette recordings from back then, I ended up winning 1992 Guitar Player Magazines Guitar competition with this tune..
ironically 1 of the prizes was a 5150 full stack, 1st edition of those amps I believe
