Intentionally pretending there isn't a difference between that

and this

To be fair, the power metal scene has always had a baked in campiness to it. Whether it be cheesey outfits like this, having weird decorations, wearing leather bracers, spikes, or a mascot. At the bare minimum you need 1 guy with a leather vest and no shirt underneath. If they have good music, I don't really care, but when bands that are average or objectively bad get the spotlight I can see how it hurts other artists feelings.

Bands with an obvious gimmick do turn me off once I find out about them, I don't know why. First time I was introduced to Castle Rat a friend was watching live stuff and I said "Jeez is she naked?", he replied something like "Almost! If you see them live you can probably get a peak at her tits!". That and the other costumes seemed lazy so it turned me off. Same with bands like Ghost, I heard a few of their songs and thought it was kinda cool, but the costumes kinda go too far into campiness. Which is weird because I've seen bands like Behemoth a ton. Maybe I self insert into bands too much and when I daydream about playing guitar for Behemoth I'd be ME, but bands like Ghost I'd just be some asshole in a mask.

Yeah, there always has been campiness or sillyness in power metal, but blind guardian didn't dress up like fuckin hobbits man :hys:

This is obviously a new, different thing

Well even Bruce dickinson is wearing some cheesy stuff live lately plus Rob Halford and his heavy metal MuMus

Guys in repurposed S&M gear look down on guys in repurposed renaissance fest costumes. News at 11:00

We all know metal is SERIOUS BUSINESS!

It reminds me of Dave Chapelle's story about how every famous black comedian, they try to get them to dress in drag

It's like every metal musician needs to be a clown or else the system wont promote them

There's more than a little selective memory going on in this thread

No, you're just conflating things that are wildly different to be an obnoxious contrarian - dressing up in costumes where it's presented seriously (even if it's camp like maiden or manowar) is completely different than dressing up in costumes where it's meant to be hilarious

Newsflash at 11:30!

RT Boomershitter with a bunch of expensive gear and a bunch of opinions on shit he knows nothing about has no talent, no band, no clips - wont shut the fuck up!

Tune in for the excruciating cringe

Yes, that combination of faux Egyptian shit and 80s athletic wear was SERIOUS. VERY SERIOUS INDEED

It obviously was during powerslave where the music was also obviously presented seriously, it's only humorous because its 40 years old

It's one thing if you don't think it's a bad thing that modern metal bands have to do that to succeed - pretending there isn't a difference is absolutely idiotic

No, the straight men dressed like leather daddies, zombie mascots, faux medievalism, Conan/Red Sonja nods, Tolkien reenactment - none of that stuff has ever been serious. It has always been a joke, with the funniest part of the joke being the people who miss it.

That doesn't mean the music is comedic. But there is most definitely a joke, and most definitely some people who get it and some people who don't.

Man I think lines are very blurred on this topic. We should be more focused on the algo issue and the fact every form of art media has become homogenized which is the real tragedy

They basically all use Gimmicks since the beginning except for the early Death-Metal,Thrash and Grindcore Bands that used themes like gore and politics, but they usually didn't dress up or made makeup parties.
And yes, modern metal sucks for the most part.
