The Fallout: Inmate Dorothy Proctor and others sued the government, stating they were given LSD without consent—frequently while confined in solitary confinement. The lawsuit eventually reached an out-of-court settlement, exposing widespread non-consensual drug testing in Canadian correctional facilities during the mid-20th century.

• The "Total Encounter Capsule": Beginning in 1967, psychiatrist Elliot Barker introduced a coercive treatment program for the "criminally insane" that featured sensory deprivation, truth serums, and psychoactive drugs including LSD and methamphetamine.
The Conditions: Patients were sometimes forced into a stark steel room—the "capsule"—for days at a time, often naked or under the influence of LSD, as part of aggressive, peer-led confrontation therapy meant to break down psychological defenses.
