...build your own cabs and make a provision to mount the power amp in the cab. I did this about 10 years ago. I made a pair of 2x12 cabs, and mounted in each cab a Peavey Classic 60 power amp. It kept the rack lighter and smaller, and since the cabs were on casters, they weren't that bad to move around. Powered P.A. cabs are the norm nowadays, so why not tube powered guitar cabs? Wacky, I know.
Matrix has a mono amp just for this. I think his issue is cost/weight

Yeah, like I said this rig will not be for live playing for a while, just for recording mainly and Studio jamming/practice. I play acoustic guitar mostly live. I wanted something light, even though it'll be in the studio, I'll have to move the rack from the cab/amp area to the computer area in the studio, so I want to avoid breaking my back. But again, if a power amp that sounds GREAT is only 10 - 15lbs heavier than one that sound "just ok" I'd put up with the extra weight.

Randall RT2/50 is another option. Two dual-tube channels, each channel can take a duet of any octal-based tube... so one side could be KT77, other side KT88 etc.... Tube bias on the front of the amp, presence, density etc. Can run a single input in and then switch (via midi if you want) between the different tube types. Weight is about 40lbs. The amp sounds great...I use it with a Mako Mak4.

yeah great amp. Sold a few of them 4-5   . More like 47lbs before packing. Heavy.

One of my Favorite amps, loud for 50w

Cheap solid State amp -----> Art SLA2 1 space. It is a deep unit. Banana clip for speaker out :( I think in the $200 range

If you're willing to wait a bit, Fryette is supposed to be coming out with a 1U 40x40 tube power amp in the near future.

Man 45 lbs for just the Poweramp, then you add the preamp, plus a Digitech DSP1101 that'll run for FX and modelling in the rig, PLUS the rack case....... you're talking 80-90 lbs total.

:aww: yeah but a great amp lol

I have been curious about the Mesa 20/20 but think I might go matrix GT 800 or 1000.

Agreed, a great power amp but if you don't want/need the cool features, one of the simpler amps would be fine. I've also used the Mosvalve 962, and it honestly sounds really good! But the Mesa 20/20, Matrix or Retro Channel would probably be great options as well.

I have tried a whole bunch of power amps over the years, some tube, some SS and the ones I liked best were the mesa 2:90 and the mesa 50/50. The Carvin TS100 was cool too though it lacked "something" not sure what. I have heard the Fryette 2:50:2 is incredible but I had a hell of a time finding one and got a tone I liked with the mesa before I found one so I called off the search. Amps I didn't like were the Matrix GT1000fx and the Rocktron velocity.
