Am I crazy?

So I've had my 2005 Splawn Quickrod for about five years now. Before that I had an original run EVH 5150 III. I am seriously thinking about getting rid of the Splawn and getting an EVH 5150 III Stealth. I kinda miss having a usable clean channel and a more modern guitar tone. Lately I just find myself wishing that my quick rod just sounded more modern and less 80s marshall. I'm less worried about getting my Eddie or Lynch on and more concerned about how the new music my band is writing sounds. Anyway... just bouncing thoughts...

I had a 2018 QR and a 50W Stealth at the same time for a bit. Still have the Stealth but to be fair, I only sold the QR to help fund other amps so I can't say that the Stealth beat out the QR for me. I actually didn't love the QR. Ended up only using Gear 1 with a boost.

If the right amp for me came along, I would move the Stealth. I find it to be too modern sounding for me and don't play it very often. I have been sticking to a 2203X and plexi clone that I also have. With the right boost, I can get the 2203X to be modern enough sounding for what I do. The 2203X is modded but I have the mod switches in the off position so it is fairly close to the stock sound.

If you can, buy a Stealth and keep the QR at least for a bit to see how the Stealth fits your bands current sound. I don't like having only one amp around and prefer to have a few that do different things. Looking for something new to try to add to the collection now actually.

Well, you have kept it for 5 years..that says something. Have you considered trying an EQ or maybe some new boosts/OD's with it? Of course that isn't going to help with a new clean.

Maybe pick up a 50 or 100 watt stealth and see if it is indeed the sound you remember before dumping your Splawn. Those Splawns can be pretty modern sounding in my opinion depending on how you set them up. I would try a VFE standout in front of the Splawn if you are trying to make it more modern sounding.

Does a 2005 Splawn Quickrod have a dedicated clean?

As someone who’s owned an amp for over 16 years do not sell that QR. You will regret it long term for sure. Grab the stealth and put the QR away in a closet. If you can go through the good and bad tone days with the stealth and not desire to pull the QR out, then off it.

I guess you don’t boost the QR to get a more modern tone?

I would try boosting the QR with a parametric eq pedal or something similar to get a more modern, 5153-type tone out of it.

Yes and no. The gain knob from the dirty channel directly effect the clean channel. The clean channel EQ also effect the tone of the gain channel. So really its a single channel amp.

Man, you sounded pretty killer with that Splawn in those live clips you posted. It sounded really good in that mix.

I agree with this . Learn from my mistake keep that amp ! I had a mark 4 that for some reason I sold . It was my main amp . Should have kept it

does it have a loop?? maybe grab something like the KSR pedal and run it through there

Don't. Do. It.

Thank you for the replies. I guess I need to sit down and twist some knobs. I love the tones I get out of the Splawn, I just wish it were a more versatile amp. My band is transitioning from a Southern hard rock vibe to more of a modern rock/metal vibe. Some days the Quickrod is sounding really good, and then some days I feel very limited with it. It is one of the most picky amps I have ever owned in terms of speakers and pickups that it likes. It also has a very limited sweet spot on the EQ.

I guess I just need to start saving my pennies and get a second amp.

The Stealth is a great amp, but I wouldn’t replace the QR with it. Also I would 100% get the 100 watt Stealth instead of the 50. That amp is all about the Green and Blue channels IMO and on the 50 they’re combined into one, so you can’t the full benefit of them at the same time. Just like all the 5150 III amps, the red channel is so compressed and gainy out of the box I only find it suitable for leads. If I want the real high gain 5150 tone I would personally get a Peavey.

Or the right boost. A Savage Drive will get you more modern.

Hey there, I'm somewhat like you but not as good and don't gig so take this with a grain of salt. I have an '08 QR. I bought it thinking I was going to be doing 80's riffs with it and it was going to be my 'Marshall' amp. It obviously does that very well but I ended up morphing my style or desire in more modern tones. I bought a Mesa Rectoverb for $500 at GC it def has more versatility and modern tones. So I didn't get rid of the QR and I'm glad I didn't because the two work so well together.

Anyway - here are a few things to try. Experiment with different OD pedals as mentioned. I've tried a few now including the Suhr Koko Boost and still end up with my Digitech Bad Monkey (TS clone). Try the Treble on '0' trick. Try some JJ tubes throughout including these new JJ EL34 II's. I really dig those. That KSR pedal looks very interesting as well. I have Small Blocks, which are essentially higher rated Greeenbacks and a Custom Custom bridge. IN the end the amp will only get 'so' modern so I do agree with getting a second amp vs getting rid of your Splawn.

The guys from Brushido Code (Bad.Seed and his buddy Derrik) use Quick Rods a lot in their band and they have a brutal tone:

Here is my ABY with my recto+splawn+koko - again doesn't hold a candle to what you do

This. If I could go back and NOT sell a few things I’ve had over the last 10 years, I would. I’ve never been in a position where I could just add new gear without selling, until the last year or so.
If you really like a piece of gear, don’t sell…just get a new gear fund going and bide your time. You’ll always be able to find the EVH.

Put KT 88’s in it and run an eq in the loop. For clean roll your vol on the guitar down some when you switch channels.
