My dad and I were working on the amp today, we couldn't find anything... I am just going to bring it into my tech on monday. Of course it will cost like $150, and find out it was some small easy thing to fix :(

or keep fucking with something you do not have the capability of fixing or finding, breaking something else in the process.

take the amplifier into a qualified technician. you want your amp fixed and dont know how to fix it. i gave you the questions he would be looking for. besides the filter caps needing replaced, i have also said over and over again you cannot troubleshoot an amplifier over an internet BBS forum.

Update:

It's been in the tech for two weeks now, and they haven't been able to find out what's wrong. They have called Mesa and they couldn't figure it out either. Right now they think the cause is s a carbon trace on the bottom of the board linking two pins of a preamp tube together, and the hum is transferring over that. I am hoping they can figure it out soon, because the bill is going to be about $250. :(

dont know if anyone mentioned this....try a different guitar cable?

my buddy was having the same problem with his powerball, and, i went down the checklist with him:

try a different PLACE as in, building, if you haven't already. you might have bad wiring altogether there.

guitar cord (his answer was it's brand new, so he didnt need to check it).

guitar wiring (if you use the same axe all the time).

PI tube

v1-v4 pre tubes (jiggle each one around kinda pressing on the tube...maybe one of the legs is soldered loosely or there's a short?)

power tubes

his issue-brand new planet waves cable "it CANT be my cable, i refuse to believe that". it took an hour to convince him.

eliminate as many variables as possible at first, and then isolate as you go along....

my bet is cable or preamp/ PI tube.

sorry if i reiterated anything.

I had a problem with an amp squealing and just being overall NOISY.....no matter what I did....wouldnt cure it.
I moved the amp to a different outlet on the other side of the building(Originally it was plugged into a power strip outlet)
and NO NOISE!
SO I thought......Cool...amp is fine....
move it back to the original plug.....NOISY!!

I just keep it plugged in by itself directly into the wall outlet and its been working fine.
God I hate amp problems.....

Good luck on your results My Friend.

I already covered all those things when I first noticed this hum. None of those, still hum's when no guitar is plugged in. This is something internal with the amp.

I had a problem similiar to this back in the day, when using a Mesa Strategy in my rack. I ended up having to run a "ground" strap / wire from each preamp and effects unit, to the power amp. The noises and hum were gone after that.
