Was trying this out today. Running the pre-amp out on the Ampeg to the effects return on my Peavey VTM. It sounds really good... the differences are kinda subtle, but the added tube warmth and character is defnitely there, and it's still tight as shit too. Before trying this I kinda found the Ampeg sorta flat sounding, especially compared to my Randall RG's.

I'm sure it would sound excellent running through a VHT or Mesa power-amp or something?

Ampeg VH owners, try this out if you can.

I'll try to get a clip of this up within the next couple days.

I have used a 80s randall SS preamp into one of my Marshall's power amp and it sounds really good. It has what people like about SS amps but it still sounds big and fat and clear.

i been meaning to try this for a while but everytime there is a tube head around i seem to forget.

I have a mesa mark III could plug my ampeg into. I havent been playing my ampeg much as its been sounding thin next to my mark III, I used to really love that amp too. I will have to try this slaving thing, I have one question though.....

When I slave the ampeg into my mark III, doesnt my ampeg still have to be hooked up to a cab? This isnt a problem cause I have two 4 x 12 cabs, I just wanted to isolate the sound coming from my mark III's tube power amp and not hear the ampeg's power amp along side of it.

I agree my old randall RG-80es had much more warmth and tube like feel than the ampeg's do, but the ampeg is way tighter and has twice as much gain too.

everything you guys say about the randalls compared to the ampeg i find complete opposite, i dont get it

I can't see any amp having twice the gain of a VH-140C. That thing is a gain monster.

yeah. boosting with my metalzone i keep the gain on the ampeg at like 2 or 3 the randall i keep on 10

Think he said the VH-140C has twice the gain as a Randall rg80es, which is true. My Ampeg has more gain than i'd ever need.

Yup, for plugging straight in (no boost) the ampeg does the metal thing alot better, but if i throw my Maxon od-808 in front of the Randall, it kills. I prefer the RG to the Ampeg, seems to be thicker, clearer, and definitely warmer, especially up at band volumes. Both are cool though.

Holy shit. Gain on 10 when boosting with the mt-2! That pedal has so much boost that i can usually set the gain around 6.5 - 7 on the Randall and still get a really thick saturated chuck out of that amp.

With the Ampeg i don't even need a boost, i find a boost just thins it out too much. I did try a metal zone with it though, and it sounded about right with the gain around 2.

I seriously think you might have a dud RG100ES. Those amps tend to vary alot between years... the '87 and over models sound thinner and have less gain than the pre-86 ones for whatever reason? I've owned a few of the RG heads, and everyone sounded different. Those older mid 80's ones sound massive at high volumes though (more so than the VH-140C, way thicker in the mids), it's no wonder Crowbar use them.

Because it's SS I don't think the Ampeg has to be hooked up to a cab. That rule only applies with tube amps.
