Hey guys, so have a bunch of amps that Im trying to decide between and thought I would do a mini shoot-out. Amps are:
Peters Gryphon
Mesa MarkIV (med b)
Splawn Nitro el34
Krank Rev1+
Mako Makoplex
Chain used was MW1 reamp> 808hw> amp> Mesa 2x12 rec cab> 57> aurora GTQ2 > Apogee > Pro Tools
(second mic) 121> Chand LTD1> Apogee> Pro Tools
The original clip was recorded with a ESP custom with EMG pickups.
Part was double tracked and pan hard L+R
This test is not totally scientific but just to throw up amps, record a riff, and then a/b
Will post results later

I like amp 4, sounds thicker than the other ones, and more to my style.
None of them sound drastically different so I went with the one that sounded best mixed with the backing track, which IMO was 3
With the backing tracks they all sound a little similar, agreed. But if you listen to just the guitar tracks alone you can hear a bit of difference.

Yeah for sure there were some subtle differences, I just meant they all seemed to be dialed in pretty similar.
Yes that is true. I put up a older track and just dialed the amps to that sound to get a common ground among them.
I'll agree they all sound very similar
Uh, well, they all sounded so similar I'd have to go with the one that was the cheapest.
I thought they all sounded similar. but alone i could hear little differences. 4 was just a little thicker than all the rest.

Sounds really close, all clips from a modeller perhaps?
I like 4 and 3. . . .5 wasn't bad either. With my track record I picked the cheapest of the bunch. I will relisten in my headphones tonight and maybe change my mind........or not. It really means nothing because I ultimately base my decision on a live mix.
U know when I get home tomorrow I will go ahead and post just the 57 mic. The 121 was eq'd so I'm sure there will be a bigger difference with just the 57.
4.
They all sounded more or less the same, particularly in the mix. With no backing number 4 was just a bit thicker than the rest.

My favorite amp was 3. partially because i'm a splawn fanboy. To be totally honest though, I thought it was the most defined while still being heavy.
close second was 4. it was so THICK

Who said 3 was a Splawn? I thought he didn't identify which was which on purpose so no one could bring their fandom into the poll

Ahh, I just figured. either way I did like it the best. maybe I r higghz.
EDIT: after listening closely to them all again, 3 very well may not be the Splawn.
I voted for #1. There was something in the mids and the way it seemed spongier that I like a lot. I listened to the clips with the backing tracks though....
my impressions:
Listening to the non-backing versions, 1-3 sound very similar. 1 sounded notably lower in the mids, and not as "in your face" while 5 sounded like it was more in the upper mid range than the others. I like the upper middier tones over the others
but that being said, all those are definitely usable, especially if it takes a lot of A/Bing just to hear the minute differences
my guesses, they are probably gonna be wayyy off though
amp 1: Splawn Nitro
amp 2: Peters Gryphon
amp 3: Krank
amp 4: Mesa Mark 4
amp 5: Mako
edit: oops for some reason I put Diezel, but meant Mako
