Love the earlier REO! Reminds me of hanging out after school listening to albums and smoking joints!

+1 for the joints!

Golden Country is a badass tune!

Attention to everybody on this thread:
Your metal & hard rock priviliges have been revoked indefinitely!

  • cease all finger horn activity at once
remove all skull-based decorations from your premises
Reduce gain and return your tuning to standard E

I did when I was a kid... What was that song, Heard it from a friend who, heard it from a friend... I prefer the DFW based REO Speedealer better.

I was a huge Richrath fan and a fan of the band's early material. Then in 1989--just after he left REO, we hired him to produce an album for us. He ended up not contributing much as he was getting ready to tour with his new band and didn't have much time for us, but it was weird writing songs with him.

Love REO, just picked up a copy of their Greatest Hits last month, had forgotten how much I liked them.

"Don't Let Him Go" with the swelling guitar lines is brilliant!! Classic Rock with great lyrics and vocals is always hard to beat.

Yeah that volume swell......... :worship:

What a GREAT BAND!!!!!!

Me too... Do they still have Sweet Meat the pig? :D

They still have the joint smoking pig!

Big REO fan here. Something musta happened between Richrath and Kevin Cronin. I saw their Behind The Music episode and it seems like they're not likely to have Richrath back. Anybody know the story?

I thought I heard something about Richrath didnt like the direction the band was going in??
Not sure but I sorta remember hearing this a long time back. :dunno:

Found this:

y the end of the 1980s, the band's popularity was waning.[5] In September 1988, Gratzer retired and in early 1989, Richrath was asked to leave over disagreements with Cronin regarding musical direction.

oh yeah...I loved their live album from way back with "ridin the storm out" and "Garys turkey trot" solo spot. This was way back before I even played guitar. I saw them once in the 80's and they were great live back then

Man, this was one of the first bands I loved listening to! Boston and REO. yeaahhhh

Back On The Road Again was the bomb!

I learned pinch harmonics from a Guitar Player interview with Gary Richrath talking about Tough Guys.

This is for you older farts out there....
Was driving home and heard "keep on Loving you" on the 80's channel.........

Damn Gary Richrath fucking LAID DOWN that Solo!!!

Not a million notes......but it was full of soul and felt perfect for that tune....

Ok....I am done walking down memory lane.... :D
Loved Hi-Infidelity!!!

They were such a great band when I was growing up. Lot of good guitar oriented songs as well.

Next to EVH......Gary Richrath did the best pick slides!!

I didn't admit to it at the time....but I had the Hi-Infidelity record when it first came out and wore the grooves off the damn thing.

I always thought that " In your Letter" sounded like a lost Neil Sedaka song!

Richrath's songwriting and playing carried the band from '71 until the early 80's and the band was only marginally successful. Cronin then writes Keep On Loving You and the band explodes in popularity. So it becomes a bit of a power struggle. Gary isn't on board with the band's softer direction but it's hard to argue with the success vs when he was writing most of the songs.

A few years later Kevin leads the band in to a new healthier lifestyle--eating better and partying a lot less. Gary isn't on board with this either. Gary feels frustrated that REO has become a health conscious pop band vs a hard partying rock band and becomes sort of uninterested and escalates his own bad habits. Kevin gets frustrated because Gary has become unreliable and hard to deal with eventually asks him to leave.
