After seeing what Mark III combos are selling for and how hard they are to find I figured I would ask what you guys think about Marshalls combo amps? Do they have anything nice for under about $800 used? DSL 401 combo maybe? JCM800 combo?

I'm not a fan of any Marshall combo's....but I do like the TSL 2x12 more then the DSL combo

I just sold my TSL 601. As I was checking to make sure it was still working,I thought this sounds great! And as the guy was in my house playing it, I told him that if things aren't working out in a week then I would take it back. :D

I guess it worked out. I still like that amp very much.

The Studio 15 was probably the best master volume Marshall combo of all time. Think mini-JCM800. They're pretty rare, so I don't know if you can snag one for under $800 anymore, but that would be the one to have, IMO.

Jubilee combo was the nicest marshall combo i've played.

I remember them being around $500-$600 used, but i think those days are gone and the fanboys drove the priced up :(

Hmm I had a DSL201 prolly 5 or 6 years ago, and it sounded OK thru a closed back 1x12 that I had, but I don't think that is exactly what your looking for.

Good luck on the combo search. I finally decided to scrap my combo idea since I can't find one that sounds right for me, hopefully you will fare better!

Well I know the Mark III combo sounds great. A good friend of mine had one so I got to play it all the time. That was back when they were selling for $600. I see them going for over $1000 now. :scared:

Yep, Mark combos are quite impressive. I gigged with one in the mid nineties before my nu metal phase :scared:

Of course I picked it up for a song because it was 1995, and it wasn't a recto :D

That said, $1K is a bit much

you could've kept your 5150 then got a 1x12 cab. just a thought.

marshall-wise, you'd be suprised how good an MG100DFX can sound, if you dial it in just right, unless you're strictly looking into valve combos. the AVT range will piss you off after a while unless you splash in some chorus. a DSL 401 would be the best choice imo. they sound pretty good.

I disagree with the above statement. No matter how well you dial in an MG series it will still sound like crap, especially if you have played better amps and you have good ears. Avoid that entire range.

Check my sig. I love it. Think of the thickness of an SLO when soloing and the upper mid voicing and a Bogner Ecstasy's vibe and you get my combo!

check out one of the old randall combo's, very marshallesque i believe TU BE posted some clips of his

I have a Traynor YCV -50, it is a great marshallesque all valve, and has enough gain for the brutalz

Kinda OT, not Marshall and not tube, but I've came across some really nice tones with my Vetta combo.

Someone else mentioned that amp to me actually. How heavy can it get with a boost? Would it be good for Iron Maiden style tones? And what does the lead tone sound like? :)

I would check out a laney VC50 combo, its the combo version of the VH100R. Its got that nice British flavor going on.

Marshall is not known for their combos and alot of them have heat issues. I had a DSL401 and 6101LE and both have known quality issues mainly due to heat.

See if you can score one of those 20% coupons at MF and try a SpiderValve, worse case return it but those amps are cool and you can still say you have a Bogner.
