I didn't realize how many people had 770DX's around here, very cool. I love mine, but I hate the stock pickups. Everything sounds "twangy" through them. Can't dial it out, even through multiple rigs. I've gotta get them swapped out, but I want to keep the blue color scheme. Will most likely end up calling Tom at BK Pickups, see if he can hook me up with some blue bobbins on a set of his pickups.
If you're looking at doing that I would recommend going the "JEM" route and putting in a set of blue Dimarzio PAF Pro pickups--I've heard in the past that the stock pickups in the 770's were created to emulate a strong, hot-rodded PAF tone. Check with Rich at Ibanezrules.com to see if he has any details on that, and Mike Z. in Philly usually stocks tons of Dimarzios in color, or can get them fairly quickly. Also doesn't charge extra for special orders. I've ordered TONS of pickups through him and his customer service rocks. Don't know what the middle pickup is like, so you could either experiment or leave it stock.
One thing unique (maybe?) about my 770DXLB is that it has an unfinished neck. My '92 770DXVM has a finished neck, and every other RG I've played has a finished neck, so I don't know if this was a custom order or something, but the neck is sanded, not finished. The downside is that I have to keep it oiled and clean it after every play, but the trade-off is the smooth, silky, lightning-fast play.
Strange that you're having that problem with the pickups in your 770--mine still sounds great after all these years--fat and grinding, but sweet and clean in positions 3 and 4.

Cheers,
