I've owned dozens of RG and JEMs from the 90s. Multiple RG550s, RG560s, RG565s, RG770s and JEMs of all colors. They are without a doubt the thinnest neck guitars you'll ever play. Modern necks cannot and will not compare. They were so dangerously thin that they almost all suffered from cracks around the rear mount locking nut. The Genesis/Reissues use top mount locking nuts for this reason..
10 years back these guitars had a used value of $500-800, which was great. Nowadays they're all 35+ years old... RG770s are going for $1200+, RG550's are hovering around $800-1000, etc.. What do you get? Heavily beat up guitars (dents, dings, neck pocket cracks, dents on the neck), heavily worn frets, rusted/pitted trems and a shitshow with people digging in the electronics cavity resulting in bad pots, crappy replacements, burnt/melted switches not to mention worn out flush mount jacks. Expect a fret level or spot level upon arrival. Expect fixing electronics upon arrival.
That being said, if you can find a good condition one they are fun as hell to play and have this low end snarl that I haven't found in many other guitars. It's this twangy-ness that comes out in the lower frets and pinch harmonics. Set up right with a Lo-Pro Edge, the trem sinks almost all the way into the body so your palm rests on the guitar and it feels so dang nice. I'd love to own one again, but I'll probably pick up an RG550 or RG770 Genesis. Or maybe I'll assemble my own from parts again.

I do. But my kids never did nothing that I had to beat their asses for or even hardly get mad about. The worst it got was pulling a Johann Beethoven forcing my son to boost his tenor sax chops.I don't know if you have kids bud, but one of the hardest things noone ever tells you about being a parent.... kids do some really funny shit that you still have to punish them for, and you have to remain a parent while correcting them... as for my mom, she failed that test that time.
Was it that model? https://ibanez.fandom.com/wiki/RG565R_(1989)Back in 1990, after I played my first few gigs, I had enough money to put down on a new Ibanez (my first new guitar). I can't remember the model nr but I think it was a RG. It had a FR, single coil in the neck, and a HB at the bridge. It had either the shark tooth or shark fin inlay. Man I wish I had a photo of that. I started to play out often and went through a change guitar like underwear phase.
The good old days.
Yeah baby—I forgot all about out the Uni’s. The UV777BK with the hologram was the stuff!
Take it easy tightening lock
nut will go a long way toward preventing cracks on back side of neck
I did that to an rg570 20 yrs ago
A tech gave me a tip and said only tighten lock nut with one finger
I have a soft spot for the jem7dbk
Kimg truthsBasically any MIJ 90's Ibanez will kick fucking ass
Wow thanks for that link. What a trip down memory lane. After looking through there, I really think it was this model below. It turns out Sweetwater is selling a reissue of them. Was it that model? https://ibanez.fandom.com/wiki/RG565R_(1989)
