I've owned dozens of RG and JEMs from the 90s. Multiple RG550s, RG560s, RG565s, RG770s and JEMs of all colors. They are without a doubt the thinnest neck guitars you'll ever play. Modern necks cannot and will not compare. They were so dangerously thin that they almost all suffered from cracks around the rear mount locking nut. The Genesis/Reissues use top mount locking nuts for this reason..

10 years back these guitars had a used value of $500-800, which was great. Nowadays they're all 35+ years old... RG770s are going for $1200+, RG550's are hovering around $800-1000, etc.. What do you get? Heavily beat up guitars (dents, dings, neck pocket cracks, dents on the neck), heavily worn frets, rusted/pitted trems and a shitshow with people digging in the electronics cavity resulting in bad pots, crappy replacements, burnt/melted switches not to mention worn out flush mount jacks. Expect a fret level or spot level upon arrival. Expect fixing electronics upon arrival.

That being said, if you can find a good condition one they are fun as hell to play and have this low end snarl that I haven't found in many other guitars. It's this twangy-ness that comes out in the lower frets and pinch harmonics. Set up right with a Lo-Pro Edge, the trem sinks almost all the way into the body so your palm rests on the guitar and it feels so dang nice. I'd love to own one again, but I'll probably pick up an RG550 or RG770 Genesis. Or maybe I'll assemble my own from parts again.

Ive been seeing the 550s climb upwards of 2k.. 770s in the 1200 to 1500 range, obviously condition is playing a role in the price.

When I was less than a year into my playing I was 15 or 16, this dude was looking for some dope money, and was trying to sell me a neon orange jem for $150 bucks, but it was broke at the nut screws and idiot me thought the guitar was just trash... oh bless my heart.. I did trade my 1x12 crate amp for his 2x12 blue voodoo because he thought it was too damn heavy... and thats the story of my first tube amp. Dude wasnt the brightest bulb in the bulb box, I got busted by my mom for selling him bags of oregano.

My 770 hasnt cracked at the mounting screws yet, thankfully.

Lol, mom must've been looking high and low for what happened to her spaghetti spices.

I don't know if you have kids bud, but one of the hardest things noone ever tells you about being a parent.... kids do some really funny shit that you still have to punish them for, and you have to remain a parent while correcting them... as for my mom, she failed that test that time.

I have 3 RG550 from 1987-1992 and one RG750. Acquired all of them from 2009-2016. They are not in perfect condition but for the price they were going, could not resist as they were still good players.

I've played the new Genesis, they are quite comparable but the necks are not as thin as on the one from the late 80s early 90s.

If you can't find a used one at a decent price, don't be afraid to try out those Genesis.

I do. But my kids never did nothing that I had to beat their asses for or even hardly get mad about. The worst it got was pulling a Johann Beethoven forcing my son to boost his tenor sax chops.

Back in 1990, after I played my first few gigs, I had enough money to put down on a new Ibanez (my first new guitar). I can't remember the model nr but I think it was a RG. It had a FR, single coil in the neck, and a HB at the bridge. It had either the shark tooth or shark fin inlay. Man I wish I had a photo of that. I started to play out often and went through a change guitar like underwear phase.

The good old days.

Was it that model? https://ibanez.fandom.com/wiki/RG565R_(1989)

Take it easy tightening lock
nut will go a long way toward preventing cracks on back side of neck
I did that to an rg570 20 yrs ago
A tech gave me a tip and said only tighten lock nut with one finger
I have a soft spot for the jem7dbk

Those seem to be in the 1500ish range lately, I have been eyeballing them. I want a Jem but I am not a huge fan of the tree of life inlays, and these seem to be the most reasonably priced.

I owned a lot of cool old Ibanez RG & S models over the years, I regret selling a few.

Red RG565 $250 pawn shop score, sold it when I was flipping gear like crazy.

Purple RG550 with EMG’s bought from someone on HCAF, also sold to buy something stupid.

Black RG7621 got it cheap on eBay, covered in stickers but it cleaned up nicely. Sold that one during my great housing market gear purge around 2011.

Always thought they’d be attainable for a couple hundred $ for the foreseeable future.

Screw your RG's. '94-'95 IC-300 and IC-350 Iceman is where it's at.
Or even better if you can find one; ICJ100 J. Yuenger signature. I'm not that lucky to have one. :(

In 91 or so I got an 88 or 89 S540 that I played the crap out of. I know, wrong decade, but they eventually became the Sabre. Gen 1 Edge vibrato, rock solid. I eventually got bored with the whammy bar stuff. I loved the wizard neck on those things though.

Not too much knowledge with the Ibanez camp, ive owned a couple but to me there's a few classics, most already mentioned.

Early 90s Saber
RG550/770
Xiphos
1527
And although im sure many will disagree I have a soft spot for the Jem and Pia

Wow thanks for that link. What a trip down memory lane. After looking through there, I really think it was this model below. It turns out Sweetwater is selling a reissue of them.

I bought the black and my buddy bought the neon purple that day. Just on the color options and pickup configs, I'm pretty sure that is what we bought. I was just a dumb kid so I didn't pay close attention back then.
