this post is funny! some of what im taking from it ""i use low output pickups, with a boost pedal, into a dimed amp / super hi gain amp". which probably does sound killer, but on paper, is a head shaker!
i like medium output pickups.....i think more than output, for me at least, what is important is the eq curve of the pickup and the magnet...not how hot it's wound. i ride my volume knob a lot though, and use a treble bleed, so i dial my setup in that arena also, to reflect what i want from a pickup....
that being said, i dont like the JB, can never get it to sound like i like pickups to sound, nor do i like the invader or duncan distortions.... even tinkering with different pot values and bleeds, i just cant get them the way i want.
i also dont love alnico 5 magnets in current production pickups they emit a certain audio character that my ears dont like..i dont know what it is. they sound "off"....like im hearing the notes underwater almost in a metal drum or something. but other people love them....
obviously a lot of people (general consumers) think they're hearing something based on what they buy or how much they spend, rather than using their ears to listen and distinguish sounds and what fits them.
