I was thinking of doing this... But also REALLY love the look of the southbay amp works "naked" cab. Either way, I have to get that old shitted on tolex off. Any idears?

Someone here tried it before. But, he either hung himself or slit his wrist half-way through the project.

But, I think Jim @Scumback has some experience with this and can get you started.

Yeah, I just didn't want to bother him right off the bat, as I know he's always slammed.

I've recovered more than a few cabs. Quite a bit of labor if you want really good results. Especially when removing the old glue. Glue types have varied throughout the years, and some of the contact cements are a major PITA to get 100% off the wood. Also, any inconsistencies/blemishes in the ply must be taken care of before retolexing, to assure a smooth, level tolexed surface. If you do it, be sure to use a heat gun while removing the old tolex.....it will soften the old glue, and that tolex should just peel right off. Do not just grip & rip.....that will likely tear the top layer of ply, which means more repair. Hope this helps.

Jim slammed? He's probably sitting by the pool sipping an umbrella drink by now......

Seems like there were some decent tutorials on YT showing how best to strip down a cab. I thought about it (very briefly). Probably with a heat gun the big pieces come off pretty easy. The smaller remnants and tears are what's time consuming, I would imagine.

Glue is biggest obstacle. Marshalls are worst from what I hear.

I have done it. Not hard really. I yanked the old stuff off. Luckily the glue was dried up and I just buzzed it off with an air sander. I used regular DAP contact cement in the red can ( don't use the low odor / water borne stuff, it sucks and doesn't stick well) The hardest part is the seams which you can generally hide on the bottom of the cab and the corners which if you have metal or plastic corners makes it much easier because it hides the corner seams. It's pretty much like hanging wallpaper.

Yep, use a heat gun to remove the tolex if possible, then you will be ahead of the game. The best luck that I ever had was heating gun to remove the sections of tolex, and then use the sections as templates, to cut out new sections to be glued on later. You can never seem to prep and sand the bare cab enough. The surface that you leave improperly sanded, will be the surface that you have to begin re-applying the new tolex onto.

I have not looked at the tutorial link posted, but if it is not addressed, always overlap your corners and then make a diagonal cut with the seam of the wood. That ensures that your pieces of tolex will fit together perfectly in the corners, even if you don't use plastic or metal corner covers.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

I resent the implication that I have an umbrella type drink in my hand already...oh wait...I can't type with this reply without putting it down.

Thanks for taking the time away from your mai-tai   ... but seriously, I love that Friedman inspired 'naked' cab. I saw one last year at tone merchants, 'bout summer time. I saw it and immediately asked Dave about it, really a cool concept.

Actually I've been fond of Capt Morgan Spiced Rum and Malibu Rum with Coke lately (basically double rum & coke) ever since a buddy turned me onto it.

He forbade me to put an umbrella in it, though. Sorry.

The NAKED cab idea was Dave's. He had an old 70/71 cab he got from Steve Stills years ago, and it's tolex was gone. So he had me build his cab that way. I guess he got offered stupid money for it awhile back and sold it (being the 1st one I guess that might have upped the price).

The NAKED cabs are cool, especially if you purposely spill beer and other "substances" on them on purpose (or by accident). You can ask George Metropoulos about that one...heh heh. He rocked a Pacifico or a Corona off the top off the NAKED cab while trying it out at the 2009 LA AMP Show.

I still have mine. Has a very unique sound, compared to the tolex equivalent. I guess the lack of covering lets it breathe a bit.

And yes, beer bottle rings, spilled JD and coke, vaginal discharge, pecker tracks and other things really give it character....

So, will the heat gun get the shmegma off?
Your going to need some type of powered sander.

.........or a whole lot of "elbow grease".

Learn from my mistake and use a power sander, if you have access to one. I did mine by hand, and in stages, which took forever. But I am a dumbass sometimes and just jump head first into a project just for the sake of learning, so like Sinatra, I did it my way
