What do you all think?
Tonal characteristics..?
I just bought an original Ibanez Jem 77fp and thus far it sounds beautiful. Very good midrange tone. It must be the basswood or something. Almost dark. HOWEVER ive only played it at low levels at my apt with my einstein. I really am dying to see how it sounds with my main rig. (Herbert)
Ive put off buying one for years because its "Vai's" guitar. But screw it.. Its all about tone.

I play mine through a VH4 and a Eintsein and I dig it. I put Motor City "Detroiters" in my Jem, I like the paf pros but they were just a little weak sometimes.
It does come off a little dark also.

Im using a universe with my herbert. Could be the pickups but i would like to have more mids.
All in all a good combo.

I had the same experience with my Universe some years ago. I did not own Diezel then, but with all equipment I used then I always disliked esp. the bridge pickup in Universe. About a year ago I purchased RG1527M and installed Blaze Custom in its bridge. In my opinion that is way better than the Blaze II that Universe has originally. As far as I know the lack of midds in Blaze I & II was exactly the reason why DiMarzio introduced Blaze Custom. Thus, I recommend checking Blaze Custom if you like the other qualities the Blaze provides.

Of course there is many many many many pickups and tastes and as this comment is nevertheless more off-topic here so I don't want to transfer this thread into debate between pickups.

P.S. No JEM here, but RG2077XL, RG1527M, RG2228 and RG7 (own-custom) in active usage with VH4.

I run 3 Ibanez J customs through my Herbert and through my Einstein before it. The J customs all have mahogany bodies with maple tops. They sound absolutely brilliant! 1 j custom has dimarzio evolutions in it. The second has Dimarzio crunch lab\liquifier combo and the 3rd J has the Duncan custom5 and jazz in it. I also have a basswood bodied RG1527 which has the crunchlab liquifier combo with the blade on bridge pickup facing the bridge. It also sounds amazing through the herbie.

I recently borrowed a friends new Jem77 FP and needless to say, I'm buying one of those as well (ah...well...I may have to move one my J Customs to do it!)

Loved the guitar!

No Jem here but I'm having a blast with my RG3720 through Einy.

Mahogany body with maple cap, Tonezone(bridge), bluevelvet and Paf Pro. I find that its really present(a far cry from all the other maho/maple guitars iv tried with the Einy) compared to my PRS and ESP. So present in fact that it bordering on brittle at times with the Tonezone. Im thinking possibly a different Cap(currently 022) or maybe a pickup swap might remedy this.

Anyone got experience with the Tonezone and Crunchlab as this is the most likely candidate also any ideas how a cruchlab would sit with the Paf Pro in the neck?
