Anyone ever had a big change in amp taste?

i've seen a guy in a friend's metal band go from a dual rec + g major setup he'd be using for years to a line6 bogner spider valve things, with all those in built effects ...he just wanted something different heh

there's something magical about single channel/pedals, let the guitar do more of the work

I am now having one. I am really gassing for a single channel modded Marshall with a nice greenback cab, A simple pedal board with a volume pedal, Boost, Chorus, reverb and a wah. This is weird for me, because I have been a recto kinda guy, and wanting to change to something so different is odd but I like the Idea of it. I am now going to be saving up my money and getting those things There are tons of old Marshalls on my craigslist going pretty cheap.

Any of you guys ever had a drastic change like this?

You sure this can't just be Rig-Talk's influence?

Overall, my tastes have changed in the last 20 years, but the staple tones have always been the same in my amp repertoire. I dig newer tones, but that doesn't necessarily mean uber hi-gain tones, just fresh tones. But for the most part, so long as I can get cripy cleans, bluesy cleans, sweet breakup, crunch, mega crunch, raunch crunch, gain, sustain, mega gain, gnawing burbling bubbling metallic tones, and then hardcore seering hot always-on-the-edge-of-feedback tones, I'm covered.

Whatever amps I have tend to cover this. Not including my soon-to-arrive Hagen, but I'm certain this amp will fall into (offer me) the needs and wants listed above.

I started out with Marshalls... got a 100watt when I was a kid, moved on to a couple of 50 watt plexis, then spent 1993-2010 with 2 5150s... now I have sort of come full circle with the Marsha which retains the Marshall vibe but offers me some of the gain characteristics of the 5150 (albeit a lot different) I guess I should try the 5150 AND the Marsha since they are sitting here and I have splitters to do it.
Oh yeah and I have an old Line 6 POD that I like too which seems strange somehow.

I guess you could say I have, but it has a lot to do with the types of bands I was playing in as well. I started out with Marshall back in the early 80's (metal), went all rack by the late 80's (still metal), more Marshalls and a Fender Tonemaster in the early/mid 90's (hard rock and blues), Matchless Chieftain/Blackface Pro dual amp rig in the mid/late 90's (Matchless Lightning/'68 Deluxe Reverb for smaller rooms during that era...played mostly funk and blues), back to the rack '99-'08 (back to metal), and then back to Marshalls (and a Marsha) and the Chieftain. There were numerous other amps over that time (XTC, Shiva, Fish, and numerous Mesa Boogies come to mind) but nothing that was able to crack the starting lineup for any length of time.

I switched from a Dual Recto to low gain/high volume Oranges for a couple of years. It was cool and I'm glad I did it since I learned a lot... however I traded my last one for another Recto a couple of years back and I don't regret it.

In the 90s and early 00's when I was doing alot of grunge and nu metal My rectos were all I could ever want. These days I have a punk band and a 50s 60s pop cover band. My recto just collects dust these days - even though rectos kill in punk rock. My older/lazyness has me using just one rig for both bands. My mark III. I use the same setting too. I just kick on a boost for the punk band.

When I was a big recto guy it was all about the lowend. Now Im all about dimensional mids and smooth bright highs. Super lows just get in the way for me now.

i wouldn't say i've had a change in taste.. but in the rigs i use to get the tones i need. i have always liked marshall type tones.. especially a superlead platform. it works for me.
right now i'm running a pedalboard in front of clean amps to that end. instead of boosting for leads.. both of the amps i'm using have dedicated switchable lead channels that are also clean.. and i just kick them in for solos. it actually isn't the most horrible sounding rig i've ever put together. i can make it work for now.

I lean towards the Marshall JCM800 2203 with 6550's and an SD-1 in front. Everything else I have 101B, VHT 50CL, Splawn QuickRod is just for different gain structures/colors/voices/flavors of the basic Marshall based tone. Only amp I have that differs is a Mesa/Boogie DC5. My tastes in amps really haven't changed since I first cranked a 2203 into a 4x12 back around 84 or so.

My tastes in guitars certainly has changed, from pointy, graphics to strat heads, flame, quilts and trans finishes.

At one point I was big into the Mesa Mark tone, but I had a sudden shift in taste and opted to try a couple of British voiced amps (Splawn QR, Orange RV50) only to come back to the Mesa Mark amps.

Sort of the same here. I have had my Mesa Mk III since the mid '90s and tried a '80 Marshall JMP100, Cameron Modded Uber and 20th Xtc the last few years. The only ones I kept was the MK III and Bogner 20th X. The Mesa is simple and just works for me and the 20th X has the Cleans I like and the Blue channel The X is more of a cross of a Fender clean and Marshall gain, the MK III is all Mesa. My musical style is still the same. Anytime I get gas for something else now I just use the Axe-Fx.
