I'm leaving Friday to go to El Esorial, Spain (28 miles NW of Madrid) for a month, Study Abroad with my Law School. Just wondered if any of you guys lived there? If so, wanna be my tour guide for a bit? :)

I have been to Madrid a few times (I live about 550 km away or so). It's a lovely city. I don't have any inside info though.

You could probably catch some good live music while you are there. They are quite big on rock, funk and jazz.
Also ask around for a live flamenco venue. They are usually referred to as a "tablao de flamenco" (the Andalusian accent is prevailing in flamenco. The correct spelling would be Tablado). It's usually an open mic night sort of thing, except the ones that play are flipping brilliant. (You would not dare get up otherwise).

Have fun!

There's one guy that hangs out on the Diezel forum, or used to.

Steve

Nice, I'll definitely catch some live music in Madrid. I think it's a 50 minute bus ride into Madrid from where I'll be. I also fully intend to hit up some other cities in Western Europe. I'm thinking Barcelona, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Paris?

I lived in Madrid. Went to El Escorial too, it's a beautiful place. They have a nice "church" or mausoleum where they have Franco's remains, pretty impressive.

Madrid is an awesome city with a lot to do man..... enjoy it, drink a lot, eat a lot of good food, and visitis as many places as you can. I recommend you take the train and go to Toledo (another city but it's not more than an hour or hour and a half) it's REALLY IMPRESSIVE. totally medieval.

Agreed, Toledo is super cool - if you are into historic architecture and the like......

If you plan on visiting other cities like the ones you have mentioned, I suggest flying. There are lots of cheap tickets. Also, Copenhagen is 3000km from Madrid... So it will be worth flying.

Copenhagen is an awesome place in the summer. Depending on where you are from, Scandinavia is really expensive (why I don't live there).

well I'll tell you what, you can find cheap flights but the thing is, it's not that easy.... sometimes they have a ticket to say Denmark for 10 euros, but it's only on a VERY specific date, and maybe you can't. It happened to me a lot..... If you have a flexible schedule and you can make changes easily you'll benefit from this a lot.

Another thing is, you gotta pay for hotel and food so it's definitely a lot cheaper than flying from US of course, but it ain't THAT cheap either. a 4 day stay at another country will run you from 200 to 500 euros depending on the ticket price, hotel, food, sightseeing, etc........ again 200 euros are 200.

Not trying to put you off or anything man, all the contrary I'm trying to make it REAL so you're prepared and know what you're gonna find.

Oh yeah the really cheap ones are hard to come by, but the average ones are pretty available. I remember living in Barcelona, going to Madrid on the Train took 12 hours and cost 124 euros. On my way back I walked into the airport, up to the Iberia counter and bought a ticket for 99 euros. It took just under an hour

And yes Joey is right. Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Paris, Barcelona... Expensive places to be. But it's the same thing as New York, LA etc...

I lived in Madrid 2004 -2005 (then in Barcelona from 2006 to 2009) and I used to take the Bus..... freaking 9 hours man ON A BUS with only ONE stop, it was devastating. Now they have the AVE (high velocity train which takes you there in about 3 hours I think).

Man I'm telling you it's not cheap to travel. I would eat sandwiches and I ALWAYS go to a supermarket and get bread, cheese, drinks etc for breakfast or dinner so I only really eat once or twice a day on the street but still 10 Euros or so each meal.

But traveling in europe is fucking awesome, I love it man....... seriously, there's nothing like it. Traveling across america is awesome too but a whole other experience all together.

Where did you live in Barcelona? I attended a music school there, and lived just of Plaza España.

I lived in Les Corts 5 minutes from Camp Nou. which music school?

I believe it was called L'Aula. It was a Berklee "affiliate".

How did you like it? I could never really bond with the place...

I was in Madrid in February. Its a freaking awesome city! Make sure to have plenty of Estrella Galicia. Reasonably priced too

oh man I loved it, I liked there for 3 years, had a great time. I really really liked it. I don't know if I could live my entire life there, but I could definitelly live another 5 more years

I'm so psyched :) I leave in 2 days!!!! One of my old high school best friends lives in Copenhagen, so there's no hotel fee associated with that city :) and as far as the other cities go, I'll be going to those cities with multiple classmates and probably stay in a hostel.

Oh yeah, Spanish chicks aren't hot...... They are beautiful and like to party

AWESOME so go to Denmark man, I've heard only GREAT things about that country. I'm still pending to go.

Watch out for Hostels....in Europe they tend to be a bit dirty and WATCH OUT FOR YOUR BELONGINGS, I can't stress that enough.

other than that enjoy! Spanish girls are BEAUTIFUL and like Ricky said, LOVE to party!

I am Danish, and I can confirm that it is indeed awesome. The awesomeness generally happens in the summer, so if you can hold on, go in July or August.
