Anyone Try a 5751 in Their Splawn or Marshall: V1-V4?

My Splawn Pro Stock B+ has plenty of gain on tap. I use OD Gear 1 and Gear 2 (OD's 1&2). I only 3 preamp tubes, because I don't have the clean channel, which it cleans up great with guitar volume. I never run the gain past 1 o'clock. I read some guys put a 5751 in V1/V2 to tame the gain a bit to get more "usable" gain out of it and a bit more clarity, although it's great for what I do on it's on. Currently, I have an RFT in V1 and Ruby Aca7 HG+ in V2 and LPS in the PI/V3. Great tones, but we're always looking to try new things, right?

Just curious if anyone has tried a 5751 in their Splawn or modded Marshall amps and what were the results.

Thanks!

I've used one. 5751s are kinda cool in a splawn. Ask Scott but I think he doesn't recommend a long plate in the PI? Not sure, just thought I read that somewhere.

The 5751 in the PI will compress the tone into a more 80's style. But, you lose a little of the Splawns oomph if ya know what I mean? Doesn't hit you in the chest as much. But it's kinda cool.
In the first position v1 is a bit much. Turns it more into a classic rock amp, clearer, but less sustain. I say try it in v2, will probably add clarity past your 1:00 settings. But not change overall tone.

yep, 5751's in V1 and V2 of my 1987 n=modded marshall. Awesome. Added some sweetness and got it under control - which it wasnt.

I use a 5751 in the PI of a RM100 with modded Marshall mods. Added some clarity and I like it!

Hey Fek, did that 5751 rob you of any real gain or just a tad in favour of clarity?

yes but always returned to 12ax7 try in your phase inverter that makes a huge difference.

Not really. It has been so long so I swapped it, I have a hard time remembering what it was like before. From what I can remember, the 5751 tightened up the amp a bit along with clearing up the tone. There is a lot of gain happening already with the modules I have but I also found that I had more use of the sweep on the gain knob with the change.

Super simple mod that takes seconds and worth a try to hear what changes it makes for your rig.

Been using 5751s in V1s (and V2s, amp dependent) in many amps to do just that - clear it up, add punch, and hey, if you're not diming the gain (who would?!?!) there's no harm no foul. I found it gave my amps more 'in yer face' right off the bat. Also use it in multi-chanel heads on the clean channel, sometimes mixed with a TungSol to brighten it up. Noticed it most when close-mic recording. Gave the tone some teeth and grit.

Great little preamp tubes those 5751s

I've tried them in a few amps. I didn't think the tone was terribly different, but they are good for taking the distortion down a notch and adding some clarity, or at least giving you a wider range of usable levels of distortion. It sounds like that's kind of what you want, so I say go for it.
