Anyone who says he isn't a great player...

Good? sure. Great? I must be drooling all over myself. His playing is too derivative for me.

He's gat a really great touch. Sure. Now if we can only put a muzzle on him. As soon as he opens his mouth, I throw up in my mouth a little.

Good...yes. Talent...yes. Great...no. SRV was great. Guess I'm a retard...

I think he is a really good guitar player, but not great. He has excellent skills. His vibrato is really good on this tune and he definately knows what good tone is.
When he starts composing things like Rivera Paradise, then he can work up to greatness. IMHO

Label me a retard. He's good, has good touch, good tone, but there is absolutely nothing original about that at all, I kid you not I didn't hear a lick or phrase in there that I haven't heard SRV play. His tone is copped directly from SRV, his licks are copped from SRV. He's got a great sound but is not a great player. A great player gives you chills, a great player makes the hair stand up on your arms and gives a loss of breath when they hold that special note at just the right time.

There are probably 1000 guys in Austin that can play circles around this guy in this style of music.

Now Mayer is a GREAT song writer, a GREAT musician and an incredible talent. I still don't like his playing at all, personally it does nothing for me, I see someone with all the potential in the world but isn't progressing.

The guy slayed Axis live, I mean slayed it, but I found his solo was incredibly lacking. There's no reason he can't be better than he is, other than him self.

Plus I hear he's a total jerk off, and I can't stand big ego's attitudes when they aren't justified. His isn't, he hasn't reinvented the wheel or anything with his music.

All that being said, I hope he's a good gateway for people to get into great guitar players, maybe they will hear the songs he covers and go listen to the originals and realize hey look, here's the REAL deal.

I just feel he doesn't have any soul, he's got great fake soul but lacks the real thing. I can't quantify that or explain it... but when I listen to Beck, or SRV, there is REAL soul and feeling there, to me Mayer is just playing through an exercise he's not feeling it. I've heard him ask audiences in videos, "can you feel that?" when he's playing some lame ass little hook thing over and over, if your asking then the answer is no, you don't have to ask people if they "feel" something, you should know by what your doing if your sharing that emotion with the audience.

Flame away, my flesh is already burned off, so you'll only be charring the bones.

you seem to be quite the critic lately, maybe that should be your profession??? :scared:

KWS and Johnny Lang > John Mayer.

Looks like I'm a retard too.

I think John Mayer is a great player and musician. I am not ready to sign on to him being the next guitar god. He went from a pop start to guitar god and I guess I haven't made the transition yet. :D

i used to think he was pretty insignificant but i admit his musicality has won me over.

but as a player i'd rather hear a gunslinger take more risks rather than try to be blues appropriate because some 670 year old black blues godfather says what you can and cannot play..

here's a younger cat i admire even though it's a little srv ish he went somewhere personal with it:

the there's this one with ej itis but still his own thing too and great tones:

both sound like they listened to a lot of gary moore. i like that.

Philip Sayce is a monster while Mayer is a munchkin. Then theres Joe,

Bonamassa, definitely. Sayce is overplaying like nobody's business in that vid.. like the Malmsteen of blues.

Mayer is a good player, but I wouldn't consider him great; certainly not on the level of Bonamassa. And his music sucks too.

So.......I guess I'm retarded.

Joe Bonamassa>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> John Mayer

In every aspect of playing. Tone, feel, phrasing, vibrato, speed etc..

His level of douchbagadness and asshaterry overrides any feeling i have on him towards his playing. But his music sucks and his voice sounds like the same feeling i get from an ice cream headache............in other words it sucks. :aww:
