This video was awesome... great freakin song... never heard it before.

Also, isn't John Mayer playing the intro riff wrong?

Just had to double check... Aside from the intro "lick," John is adding a douche note in the riff.

Yes, i went to that Hendrix show when it came around, KWS smoked everyone that night. And not just a guitar players opinion, he owned the crowd, got the loudest applause, etc. I still enjoyed the others that night, except Vernon Reid who reminds us all what a guitar sounds like when you try and imititate a blender with one.

Eric Gales gets my vote for the premier soulful blues/rock gunslinger...Mayer is a talent no doubt and successful at songwriting, but doesnt quite have the risk taking dramatic playing that turns my head...he's totally taking SRV's vocal style and licks, which is cool, but there is only ONE SRV...But if i wanna hear someone play like that, i 'll listen to Mike Landau whose incredibly unique, yet scary talented. in terms of overplaying, its all personal expression.. Jeff Beck stands alone on the top, a true original and own voice.

Starting a Mayer praise thread on this forum is pretty much the same as walking into Harlem like John McLean in Die Hard With a Vengeance. You should always be prepared to face the heat.

For whatever reason...
ie hes not brootalz enough?
ie people are jealous of his fame?
ie people are jealous of his ability to bed various actresses?
ie people are jealous that Two Rock answers the phone when he calls?

He will never be respected on this forum. Its probably for a combination of the reasons Ive mentioned. But the usual defense to hide the actual reason is something:

"Hes a hack and <insert your pick of SRV, Beck, Hendrix, Timmons, KWS, etc> is a much better player than him"

Of course these players are better than him, but they are world class. Them being better than Mayer doesnt make him a bad player. The dude can play guitar. I wish I could be as bad a player as him.

Good? sure. Great? I must be drooling all over myself. His playing is too derivative for me.
Seriously, anybody who cant see that is an absolute retard in my book but what do I know, I love Yngwie..

No offense Adam but you werent a bad sort before and then someone told me that you now attend GIT . since then, youve become somewhat of an over opinionated condescending prick.

Im not trying to shit on your shoes because Im being sincere when I say that I thought that you were a good dude but there is a definite difference since this whole GIT business...

I agree with Dallas on this one. I think Mayer is a great songwriter and musician, and a good guitar player, but he lacks a lot of soul IMHO.

Agreed Bonamassa, SRV are definitely a LOT more soulful of guitar players than Mayer. I also agree w/ EWSEthan though, he won't ever get a fair shake on this board.

I'd love to see Mayer try to pull off a song like this:

or

I wish Chris had the same groove and funky blues in him that he had on his first two albums. But I know he hates being compared to SRV. But, he does have TONS of soul, groove, and chops that are hard to compare to that's for sure!

He's a songwriter who can play guitar, not a guitarist who can write good songs. Theres a big difference between the two.

I'm not entirely sure where you got that from since I'm far less active on forums than I used to be. I'm not gonna lie that my opinions on certain subjects have changed in recent times, but whether or not that has anything to do with me studying where I do or not, I have no idea. If anything, I've become much more open-minded, much more tolerant of many different genres of music and much less interested in utter shreddery. That's really all there is to it.

And if you really think I believe that anybody who doesn't think Mayer is great is a retard then I'm not sure what to tell you. It was worded provocatively for one reason; to be provocative, nothing more nothing less. Was I trying to stir it a little? Probably. I suppose I knew this thread wouldn't really go down to well here but the main point still stands. I do think he's a very good player and I think calling him anything less than that is a little ridiculous, even he does tend to be derivative. If that makes me an over-opinionated condescending prick then so be it.

you seem to be quite the critic lately, maybe that should be your profession??? :scared:

If this was directed at me, I haven't been much of a critic at all.. that band Vampire Weekend is terrible... I don't think anyone can disagree with that fact. And I didn't insult Mayer at all, gave him credit where credit is due.

If it wasn't at me then oh well :)
