I'm not entirely sure where you got that from since I'm far less active on forums than I used to be. I'm not gonna lie that my opinions on certain subjects have changed in recent times, but whether or not that has anything to do with me studying where I do or not, I have no idea. If anything, I've become much more open-minded, much more tolerant of many different genres of music and much less interested in utter shreddery. That's really all there is to it.

Hey, Im just calling as I see it and I remember you being a lot more open minded and tolerant in the past when you were on the forums regularly. I can understand changes in taste and POV, especially when experiencing something like GIt but IMO, your comments in that YJM thread were snotty as hell without any strong basis

And if you really think I believe that anybody who doesn't think Mayer is great is a retard then I'm not sure what to tell you. It was worded provocatively for one reason; to be provocative, nothing more nothing less. Was I trying to stir it a little? Probably. I suppose I knew this thread wouldn't really go down to well here but the main point still stands. I do think he's a very good player and I think calling him anything less than that is a little ridiculous, even he does tend to be derivative. If that makes me an over-opinionated condescending prick then so be it.

Ok, so you kind of started a troll thread. Truthfully my initial reaction to this thread was based on your comments in the YJM thread. That said, I find Mayer to be a Woefully overrated player, a bar player that got lucky. As was mentioned earlier, you can find 1000 guys doing what he does and in most cases better IMO. for some reason, the powers that be decided to set him up with a world class rhythm section, market him to death and to be honest, Im bored by what he has to offer; nothing fresh and derivative to the point of are you kidding me. With an acoustic in his hands, hes a 3rd rate Dave Matthews and with an electric, nothing more than yet another guy trying to ride SRV's coat tails.

For my money, a cat like Joe Bonamassa can outplay, outsing and out write him to the point that isnt even worth comparing But I do so for obvious reasons. I find Mayer to be nothing more than a product of marketing... Can he play? Sure, is he special in anyway, not on his life IMO..

Getting back to the my original post to you, Im not trying to rail away on you and apologize for being harsh but I have noticed a distinct difference in you...

Peace

The only real thing I liked from John Mayer was the skit he did on the Dave Chapelle show.....
that was some funny shit!

I was "snotty" in the Malmsteen thread because I didn't like his idea of the blues? Is that the one you're referring to? As for my open-mindedness, I can say with absolute honesty that I really wasn't more open-minded in the past. I was a bonafide progsnob, whether I showed it or not. I truly have opened up to a lot of stuff I never thought I'd listen to two years ago and I'm so glad I've been exposed to so much different music. More tolerant? Perhaps, but of what? The only thing I can think that you're referring to is that I ragged on uber-shreddaz less... I think what you're getting at is that the two of us shared more opinions which led to less disagreement and therefore more "tolerance" on my part?

Your opinion on Mayer is fair enough though, I respect it. I'm not so sure that he's all hype personally but that's cool.

I guess only retards have a higher standard for the term great.

Dead on...

/thread

i get a kick out the hatred for john mayer by 99% of the male population. you know you are doing something right when you have guys writing short novels on why you suck and getting called a douchebag by people who never met you whos mom, wife and daughter you could and probably have bagged at the same time.

I think he's pretty good. I even like a couple of his songs. I also hate many of them.  Good guitarist though.

I actually know girls yes plural that don't like Mayer, and quite a few who find him really disgusting!

He doesnt even come close to SRV. He is a decent player but lacking the feel that SRV had. SRV would chew him a new A-hole.

im a huge srv fan, so i guess you can say i like this "style" of blues. the guy can play. but id rather hear him doing his original music way more than living out his srv wannabe fantasies. i dig his music and think hes a great writer/composer. i dont judge musicians by whether they are assholes or not, if i did i would probably run out of shit to listen to real quick.

i'm not so keen on mayer's srv type trio playing, but i like his songwriting and singing on his hits like vultures, gravity, daughters--

the production on continuum however was pretty flat and drab. had it been engineered better it would have been a classic.
want a revelation, play his version of axis bold as love then throw the original on and hear the difference.

No offense Adam but you werent a bad sort before and then someone told me that you now attend GIT . since then, youve become somewhat of an over opinionated condescending prick.

Im not trying to shit on your shoes because Im being sincere when I say that I thought that you were a good dude but there is a definite difference since this whole GIT business...

I like the part where you say no offense but you're a condescending prick :D That's like, well, she's not fat, but get my harpoon. One kinda invalidates the other, n'est pas?

I think he is a really good guitar player, but not great. He has excellent skills. His vibrato is really good on this tune and he definately knows what good tone is.
When he starts composing things like Rivera Paradise, then he can work up to greatness. IMHO

The topic is "great player..."

Not great composer :D

RH, I thought you weren`t too fond of Mayer? Didn`t you and Joeytpg (?) have a few discussions about him?

Mayer is better than me, that`s for sure :D
Therefore I think of him as good... I believe that might be the point of good/not good as a player.

My level = equilibrium
(That`s when I rate someone unconsciously. When I actually listen, I can think of players less technical than me as good, because they deliver something else to the table, f.ex. great vibrato, nice chords etc.)

I also like KWS, Lang, Bonamassa etc :)

I've been a fan of his for a while, I just kinda wound Joey up I guess. I kinda resisted Mayer at first, until I saw his "Where The Light Is" DVD :dunno:

Whether he's good or great isn't for me to say. That being said, the video I like the least in this thread was the first.

That Eric Gales video was great. I had never heard of him. Thanks for posting.

Oh Yeah?!?!? My guitar player can beat up your guitar player!!

This shit is hillarious!

:hys:

great player... SRV - blues style rock, and really awesome on an acoustic guitar. Good pop songwriter with lots of control on the instrument.. His playing on "neon' is outstanding..

most electric lead guys would have a hard time hanging with this IMHO

Guess that's the category I'm in.
