axe-fx is overkill for me

Lately I've only been using the axe-fx in the loop of my Mesa for effects only so I'm thinking about just replacing it with something cheaper. I only use the compressor, 2 delays, reverb, chorus, some eq, and a harmonizer w/2 voices every now and then. That's pretty much it, so what would be the best option? I run a BB preamp and a wah out front, just need either a few pedals or a rack unit in the loop I guess. I was looking at the tc g-major II. Is this the best option or should I just get a few pedals? Was also looking at the carl martin quattro.. intriguing, anyone ever use this unit?

If it's an Ultra, I'll help you with your pain... I'll take that off yer hands, for a small fee of course :D

I dunno man, seriously, if it's all you're using it for, bear in mind it's still very damn good (best??) at just that - crisp, clear, awesome effects. If you've already got the space to grow with it, just stick with it, and in a few years, months, days or perspectives, you'll be enjoying the added benefits.

Seriously, if you've already got one, and it's working for you even if it's not to its fullest potential, shit man, just keep it.

Peace :dunno:

I realy like the EHX Nanoverb, I'm the same , I like to keep things simple. Wah Delay and reverb pedals for me.

Is your fx loop serial or parallel? That would help you make a decision. Some fx units have a lag when switching. So if you are serial this could be a big problem. The Axe switches very fast, especially compared to say an Eventide Eclipse. But there are lots of options for fx units. Unless you bought it used keep it. Why take the loss? The Axe could serve as a backup rig by itself if you set it up right. I'm definitely not an Axe Fx fanboy, but since you have it already it does have some good fx and again, can be a back up rig unto itself.

Thanks for the replies so far. First of all the axe-fx is a standard and as far as sticking with it to realize it's full potential, I've already been there mostly. I've had it for well over a year. It's a standard and I love what it does, have used it with all kinds of set-ups, fr & amps, and have tweaked it more than you could ever imagine. I know it's hard to believe but I prefer using my amp at this point in my life. I'm not really into arguing about it, or even discussing it in this thread. Just love how my amp is sounding and working for me right now.
My amp is a Mesa Mark III. The loop is serial and it works very well . I did have a g-major 1 a few years ago and remember liking it and I know it worked well with the amp. The fx are very good in the axe-fx but not sure if they are that much better to make a noticeable difference with what I'm using.
Starting to get PM's from people looking to buy my axe-fx. Appreciate the offers, but it's not going to happen until I decide and get a replacement. I will keep it until I can compare it with another set-up side by side.
Great idea though keeping the axe-fx as an amp back-up, although I have several other amps. I'm leaning more toward using the xtra cash toward a new guitar.

Fractal audio is announcing or releasing something new next week. IMO it will be an FX only unit, so I would wait and see if it is what you are looking for.

I'm pretty sure it's axe edit that's finished, the betanis what we have been using and it's buggy.

They announced a footcontroller and it was two yeas before they actually started selling them.

my bet is also an FX only unit, I'd wait and find out.
If not by a G-sharp

edit: G-force hahahah

Its axe edit and axe manage , they went out for final testing.

So what will be so different with the latest Axe-Edit compared to the current one that's downloadable??

Thanks,

Bugs fixed, and some cool options. The assign IR slots is cool.

Not sure but if you can name amps cabs that would be cool as well.

That would be fantastic, even more so if it were a floor unit like the L6 M series or the TC G-System. I've got no desire to replace my Mesas with a modeler, but the effects are great.

I've had two Axe-FX, both a Std and Ultra, and found it was over my head both times. I am back to amps for good this time.
The Axe may very well be the most amazing piece of gear ever made but to unlock it's potential you have to know a lot.
A lot about things I'm just not up to speed on. I found I was tinkering all the time and never playing. It sounded good sometimes and sometimes sounded awful.
It's all in how well you can understand all the parameters. Coming from a few pedals and an amp the learning curve was too great for me.
I love the Axe-Fx but it just isn't for me and it's too much of an investment for a little delay and reverb even though it would certainly do well just for that.

This is all one needs to understand of the AxeFX.

Not really, not if you can't dial it in well. I've heard plenty of AxeFX clips that sounded like flat mushy turd just because the user didn't understand all the parameters and couldn't dial it in well. Then you've got others that make it sound as if the greatest tube amp is a downgrade. It all depends on the person.

This is true, but has nothing to do with what you need to understand about the AxeFX.

Sorry, I didn't know we were waxing philosophical.

Rogue likes to wax things but not philosophy. :D
