I have a set of holy divers I was really disappointed with until I played around with the height. You might want to try that first before you flick them off. Crappy response from bkp customer service though
I almost thought about posting the e mail because I was amused/surprised.
I've done the height thing. Just not my thing.

Don't beat yourself up, I tried to like the Bareknuckle ABRAXAS set for well over a year and I always felt the same way, plenty of detail and power just no character or tone to be had kinda like I couldn't hear the character of my playing or the guitars tone come through, sure the pickup seemed to transfer the notes just not the character and detail which is the very essence of a guitar player.
Im swearing off Boutique pickups for awhile (though I might spring for some Lollar's or Skatterbrane"s), I bought some Seymour Duncan Antiquity humbuckers and they sing and shine and bring out the character of my playing in spades.
I also checked out my wiring and pots and all that jive only to come to the realization that these BK Abraxas wern't all that, you can read my review in the review section its accurate and true, (though I know how popular true opinions can be), accept it there goes $350 bucks...for what its worth Tim tried to recommend those Rebel Yell's to me when I had consulted him, keep in mind they are Pro Player endorsed, which means he's gotta sell them, sell them, sell them....Im sure endorsements dont come free these days and Steve Stevens has alot of appeal, that dosn't mean the pickups will sound good for everyone though.

You said what I couldn't put my fingers on: Character.
Cool pup but it just wasn't my bag. It's going to a happy home and I hope someone likes it more than me.
I'm thinking MCP/DiMarzio. I've never tried Motor City before but I've heard killer things. As for DiMarzio, I've always been a fan and both my Les Paul and Strat will be outfitted with them. Probably gonna do Super D/Liquifire or Crunch Lab/Liquifire for the Strat and Transition/Liquifire for the Paul.

I wish I could take my guitar and rig somewhere that has all the pickups I'm interested in, and I could just pop one in, play for a bit, and then pop the next one in. No soldering.![]()
Listening to online clips of pups you're interested and reading specs can help you make a baseline decision, but you just don't know how it's gonna sound until it's in your guitar. It can be exciting and frustrating all at once.
