BE100 owners, what guitar pup combo

I'm thinking whatever pickups I do decide to get next to better compliment my BE100 will be wax potted. As much as I love non-waxpotted pickups, they just make too much noise with the BE (atleast my Wolfetones do). My R9 is not as bright as my LP Standard so brighter pickups is what sounds best with it.

Heres what I'm thinking:

*Bare Knuckles: Some sort of Vintage Hot's. LOVE the Mules I had but sold them. Something like Mules but more balls and brightness.
*Motor City: Only thing I hear of is the 2nd Degree BB but wondering if the neck will be bright enough. (Can always turn down treble)
*Some others that are in the Vintage-Hot territory

All my guitars sound incredible through this fucker.....The BE100 sounds so damn good, this is the tone I've chased my whole life, but even better than that.....I'm amazed at the tone every time I play it. I LOVE this amp!!!! I want another one for backup so I'll never have to be without it lol.

For me , Zhangbucker Pickups (all A2) work great with BE100 and all kind of gear ...
LP with Slugbucker/Woodbucker
Telecaster HH all mahogany with Pagey 2
Honestly i m done with pickups since i tried them .

i cant imagine a pickup combo that wouldnt sound great thru this amp, assuming the pickups sound good in general

+1.....

And sorry folks to gush about the amp like I did about the BE last night....I had just came in not too long before the post crankin' the amp in the garage for a couple of hours, was just blown away. I always go for trying to find my own tone, but just for fun I was jamming on some covers broke out with some girl gone bad and it was just perfect but on steroids, then went to play amberdawn, same result....it was like geez....how can you flip from EVH to YJM so well and it sounds so great. My purple Ibby with air zone area 61 paf joe with this amp straight no fx through the scumback/suhr/caa 4x12.....

I love the amp, I don't like leaving it in the garage so I bring it in the house so it will be comfortable in the climate controlled house lol

I use vintage, non-potted A2 pups, like SD Antiquity or Seth Lover, or Gibson Burstbuckers.
My G&L Legacy has a JB hb in the bridge.

Used those when I had the Smallbox and BE100, and use them with the JJ now.
I really like the open feel and dynamics of lower output hbs. I use boost or od pedals if I want more juice.

Update: I slapped a MCP Detroiter into the bridge position of my SG, and now that guitar kills with the JJ100. The JJ responds well to the extra ouput and thickness of the Detroiter. It's just what my SG needed. Before, it was kinda thin and trebly, but I liked the vintage feel.
I tried the Whole Lotta Love set (too compressed), and some Railhammers (clinical/harsh). The MCP added what I wanted, without sacrificing the open, PAF vibe or response to picking and guitar volume.
Seriously wanting a set of 2DBBs for my Les Paul now.

I love my throbak sle 101's in my les Paul's with my BE!!! Best amp I have ever had the pleasure of owning.

Hey Dave,

I saw this old post and It made me think of a few questions.

I'm considering building a new axe... looking at pickup choices. I see you are a fan of the 2nd Degree Black belts. You can get them covered or uncovered. Which do you prefer? Notice a big difference?

Can these be coil tapped for a single coil sound? Does this effect the tone of the humbucker when full throttle dual coil mode?

I don't have any experience with the 2nd Degree Black Belts, so I can't help you there.. Only thing I have learned in my tone-chasing is that, for me, high gain amps sound best with pickups that are not high-output. I play PRS guitars through my BE-100 and put in Lollar Imperial humbuckers. The gain on my BE-100 is on 8 and this combination (low output pickups, gain up on the amp) is great for what I play: straigh-up rock (Foo Fighters, etc).

I totally agree with dude bro above me ^^^
I also play prs guitars and I found that the BE100 sounds killer with a paf style pickup. It definitely has somthing to do with the presents of the tone. Just work the best for me. I love all my other pickups too, but there's this cool squishyness that comes with a BE and paf mix.
Good luck man!

I've used JB's, Jackson J92c, EMG,s, EVH Wolfgang, and others, but none sound better then the EVH Frankie pup.. I guess like you guys are saying, it's a PAF style, It just hits hard through the BE.. just my experience.

SSH+ sounds great in the bridge of my modern with my small box. No flub in standard tuning perfect amount of tightness. No need for low cut overdrives or anything of that nature.

Good feedback guys.

+1 on the EVH Frankenstein. On two of my builds (The B&W and the Frankenstein) I used this pickup and I love it! I have a Custom 78 in the Bumble Bee (pretty cool low output... I like this one too!) and a IM1 in the 5150. Of all of these... the Frankenstein pickup is my favorite! However it's a "take it or leave it" pickup. No customization available and DiMarzio will point you to the IM1(which is ok but the least favorite of my four builds) if you want the same pickup with any other color options... f spacing... ect. I know Dave has said that uses the 2nd Degree black belts when he voices his amps. I thought I'd possibly give them a whirl this time to see if I like them. I'll be playing through an amp he modded so... my guess is it should be a good match.

When I go to the site I see you can order them covered or... not. I'm just curious how this effects tone and which is preferable.

Also... I've never coil tapped a humbucker to attempt to get a single coil sound. Is this possible with the 2nd Degree Blackbelts? Does it result in any "tone suck" when running it regular as a humbucker?

What are your thoughts Dave?

I`ve got the 2nd Degree Blackbelt in a mahogany hardtail super strat but I`d rather dial in my smallbox a bit more before I can tell how it sounds. Sounded killer with my 5150 lll . Tight low end , chimey highs and dosen`t get muddy when some gain is thrown at it. I ordered it in the vintage ivory color and it matches up darn near perfect color wise with the creme pickup ring I got from allparts

I would go without a cover, don't split it, it sounds good clean also.

Thanks Dave!

Ever work with the Graph Tech Ghost Bridge piezo pickup Floyd Rose?

I usually use FR originals (modded with brass big blocks) but an lured toward having the acoustic sound as well. Might bee too much "gizmo" and I don't want to sacrifice tone. Better to stay pure?
