what's your price ceiling? meathead or vh4.

If I change from the XTC my price will be what I sell the XTC for, or make a trade.

Well a Roadster will get low, the cleans are great, and channel two is cool as well.

I will ask Mike for a specfic low end demo of the Meathead in November, I really cant remember that aspect

My XTC shit all over my roadster... roadster is long gone, XTC is here to stay. :)

Very true!

i am with some others here with the belief there is no best in one head... what sounds are you going for a long with the heavy low end tone (recto/uber?)?

But you still have your Rackmount Recto (even though it's like the 23498573498573th one you've owned). :)

All in one head that is tube that I have seen is only the RM100. I'm not saying the RM100 is the end all amp, it just seems to get as close as to what you want.

I will say Diezel Herbert...however there is no "one" -perfect- like was pointed out before. The Herbert is the best for metal which is why I own it. Think how many pros you see that have 3 different amps and use switchers to have one pr. channel etc. etc.
It does everything else -extremely- well too. Perhaps the Einstein or VH4 would be good too, depending on what tones you want.

If you have problems with the mids on the Diezel, you need to try different settings or maybe even change your cabs.
All I know is that the Herbert with my new 4x12" G12K100 Diezel FL, I have to hold it back to not eat other peoples 100W + 4x12"

Just makes my bass player step up his playing a few notches!!!

I feel all the amps / gear here is great .... They all have strong and weak spots. It is all about the sound and style you are playing ... and of course personal preferences.

What I said about Diezel does not change no matter how it is set up. I know it is capable of being louder than most amps. But I was talking about the mix. It can very easy be buried by a keyboard, Brass horns or a Marshall's upper mid-range honk. I believe the 100's are even more this way because of the lower content of the upper mids.

I believe the Herbert is one of the best voices for "metal". I think they are great amps. The thump, articulation and voice are great. It is all about the application.

Just like I do not want ketchup on my waffles .... they are great on french fries.

I just do not believe any one amp can do it all. "Metal" is only a very small piece of all the flavors used by musicians.

Stephen may be right about the one head thing?

maybe dump the XTC for a Recto and a Marshall?

That kind of what I have been doing as of late ....
Tremoverb / THD Plexi One rig.

What about a RM100 and then gill it with the modules to get the tones you want. There are tons of standard and modded modules. The Egnater Mod100 has 3 modules with 2 channels each. Just a thought.

I did not think the Egnater did the modern low end thing all that great either.

+1 on the Axe-FX Ultra and lord knows I have tried every high end tube amp 3x.

It just is not the same as a tube amp .... but is very very consistent.

VHT .... the bottom on all of them drops of around 100 hertz .... just does nnot have that thump.

THD .... great for the vintage voices. But does not do the modern thing.

Mesa ....

Dual Rectifiers .... does get loose in the bottom, does not cut in the upper midrange as well as some others. All the newer ones are too harsh in the high end for me.

Mark Series .... does not really do that crunch thing like a marshall or have the hair. A bit too compressed for a lot of things.

Stiletto .... does not have the low end.

The Uber has the same problems as the Dual Rectifier.
Stephen, how is the tremoverb ? have you tried the rectoverb ? I have been tossing up between a Mesa Recto amp and a VHT UL to go with my JMP, it is very hard to pick between the vht and recto and for which recto model to get. i have only used dual recto 2 and 3 channel, no tremo and rectoverb

I very much like mine. I have played on a lot of DR's over the years and never found one that sounds like mine. The Tremoverb is not as bright as the other 2 channel DR's and the clean is much better. It has more usable voices than any of them. I believe the rack mount DR's are also very good. But any of the two channel DR's have that same basic sound when it comes to the heavy.

I have played on a Rectoverb ... it is alright. But I like the Tremoverb, Rack, 2 channel, triple and dual much better and in that order.

The UL is a great amp but does not have the bottom of the low end like a Urber, DR or Herbert.

Some amps have more low end or gain but ....
I have never played on a amp that when A/B with my Tremoverb that I felt was more aggressive. Believe me I am still looking.

... its all just a matter of taste.

I would agree there is no 1 head do it all, I just wanted some ideas. I dont know why I cant be satisfied whit what I have but I just feel I'm missing something. I guess I should just be happy with what I have. Would still love to hear a Herbert in person in the Portland area, I'l bring my XTC over and we can compare the 2, who knows, if we both like what we hear we can make a trade.

only you will know what you are missing in your tone. because along with that is your own personal feel, style, and preference in amplifiers that a forum just cant give you.

been saying that for a long time - ive been missing alot and its to the point im not happy with it anymore. its very un-inspiring to have a tone in your head or a badass riff, flip on my setup, and the tone is so different from what im thinking that i lose inspiration to write material. i just recently decided to do something about it - so you can read my sig and figure out real quick how bad it was

Have you considered the new Suhr PT100 (Pete Thorn model)? It gets a pretty wide range of tones and is 3 channel ( Clean channel, Overdrive Channel, & Overdrive Channel W/Boost. Also has "Feedback" and "Whomp" controls on back of amp. Check out the Youtube video in this post: Pete Thorn's PT100 demo vid.

My fav all in one to date is the Engl SE .
I would only buy this one used though..

I think the VH4 would be the obvious choice if you're after versatility and modern tones. It's got all kinds of different sounds in spades and maybe one of the best Thrash sounds you can get, and if you play with tubes, it can also be more vintage oriented, as you wish.

Another one I wanna throw in, although it might not be very popular due to its snazzy looks, but I have to say I am very impressed by the H&K Triamp MkII as an amp for all styles. It can be very organic/Marshally and Voxy sounding in 50W mode and gets mean and tight with as much low end as anyone could need in 100W. It is not gonna give you the best ever Metal tone or the best ever Plexi or the best type of Cameron style Marshall, but that kind of versatility will be hard to find in one amp anyways - but it does a good job and provides a nice base to build your tone on. Also has one of the best loops I've ever come across and with the Midi option it's easy to control, too. Via MIDI you can not only switch the loop on/off, but also change from serial to parallel, if that is required.

I am a big fan of its cleans, its Vox like Ch1A, it's Plexi 2A as well as its 3A leads. 2B is great for Santana style stuff or - if you set it a bit brighter, even VHII, 3B has loads of low end.

The only downside is that with my HB loaded guitars, I have to change settings if I wanna use both, 3A and 3B. Not a big deal though, as I set 3A for my lead channel in the cover band, and adjust for 3B as my brootalz channel with the metal band. I hardly need them both at the same time. Main change is that bass is good around 01:00 to 02:00 for 3A but needs to be backed off below 11:30 for 3B, otherwise the bass player can go home  .

Well, let's see, I have 2 weeks on the amp, we will know more if it's still in my posession in October :D

This is just what I was thinking. You can only use the single channel mods, but very versatile and won't break the bank.
*cough cough * I know where there HAPPENS to be a RM100 with upgraded Mercury Output tranny for sale right now!
Great deal on a great amp if you want something that can do everything.
