Finally got an amp with a killer clean channel, so now I'm looking to add a compressor to my board. Not wanting or needing anything super expensive. I've never owned one so I guess you would call me a compressor n00b  :aww:

Please give me some tips and advise

Thanks

I have never owned one but Rob Keeley's Compressor is supposed to be one of the best in the business. It was the type of pedal that put him on the map so to speak. I have one coming in the mail soon but not sure exactly when. He has been pretty busy after NAMM. I'm getting one of those Compressor Plus pedals as I think that will be enough for my needs. He has the much larger Compressor Pro but I think that would be too much for me.

I've got the Keeley Tone station which has a compressor in it. Works great, also works great with bass.

Not sure if this is what you're referring to, but I've got an old 2-knob Keeley Compressor from around 2006. After I played around with the trim pot inside (for attack time, IIRC), it ended up being one of my favorite comps.

Yeah, mine's got different graphics on it, but everything about it is top-shelf. Very quiet, can be really transparent if it's set that way. Plenty of color, if you want it, too. Great pedal!

I had the Keeley 4 Knob compressor. Cool pedal, but found myself using it less & less over time though. Plus it was pretty noisy, which I guess is the same with all compressors. I don't think I got much more benefit out of having the 4 knob version, compared to the 2 Knob. Could've saved a little money there.

I have a Barber Tone Press. IIRC, you can find a used one for about $40. I loved using it back when I had a Strat.

I've never owned one, but I've heard a lot of good things about the Joyo JF-10 Dyna.
Great bang for the buck they say, with good build quality.

$40

I see them around $90 on Reverb.

I do really like my barber tone press, but must admit I am considering moving it on. It has served me well.
I have heard very good things about the Mooer Yellow comp

That far off, huh? Maybe I'm mixing it up with something else... been a couple years since I picked it up.

The Yellow Comp is what I recommended. I’ve only ever used a Boss compressor other than the Mooer, but the Mooer is much better, imho.

Side note - Joe, I don’t need to borrow that Barber. I thought it was an OD when I saw that pic. :D

I’ve got a little yellow Mooer compressor on my board. I only use on the funk stuff my cover band plays. Does the trick for me.

I like this one as a subtle compressor that really has no sound, but you notice everything sounds smaller when you turn it off. It is great as something you leave on all the time for clean sounds.

I just picked up a Pigtronix Philosopher's Tone Mini pedal today. I didn't get to try it, but I did like the original as a comp for sustain boost. That's what it's good at, so squishing picks isn't really it's thing. Good middle of the road squish is MXR stuff. I like their Bass Compressor on bass, and I squish the shit out of my bass signal.

I always liked the comps with a blend knob so that I could back off some of the squish if I wanted. Barber Tone Press and the Wampler Ego were my go to's.
