I regret moving from Seattle in '96 to San Diego with the band I was in. Band was getting good momentum in Seattle and lost it all in So Cal. They weren't rockstars in a few years so obviously Seattle sucked!
Band imploded soon after as my best friend and closest musical partner in the band had an AA freak out and left, with no notice, to go back to Seattle/Family. Guess who was the one pushing the hardest to move in the first place? He was my room-mate and left me holding the bag on rent. Throw in I had left behind a kick ass new girlfriend in the name of Rock 'n' Roll and ended up leaving the band within a year of moving anyway. My friend who bailed was my Metal compadre and the others were all about being Punk Rock. We used to have a great mix of the two but once the balance was gone so was the Metal. Fell into a nice, full fledged depression until moving back to Seattle 5 years later. Should have gone to L.A. after leaving the band and tried harder. The band should have moved to L.A. and gone for it, not fucking San Diego which had a horrible scene for heavy music then. Musicians in So Cal were as vapid and self serving as you might imagine. Apart from The Casbah, every club/bar was lame with zero atmosphere.
Partly I blame myself as I never had the hardcore drive that it was music/band or nothing. That level of desperation that drives you to do your utmost to succeed.
Funny thing is, even though it lingers as a regret I wouldn't change it if I could as I wouldn't have met my Wife when I did after I had been back in Seattle for a while. We sometimes talk about the path we needed to walk to meet each other.
