sounds nice to me

I saw this video and went to Interstate music to try one out thinking it would be a great way to get good tone with light weight. :aww: It sounded like every other el84 based amp and not at all like the video. That said, I did not play it cranked up, I only messed with it for 30 min, and I was playing through a greenback cab. I have owned the Engl's Ironball and the Pink Taco. Played through an Orange Tiny Terror and the Mesa V 25. If you like big tube sound, get or keep the big tube amp. Of the 4 el84 amps I have experience with, the Pink Taco was the only one that did not sound like el84's but I still sold it.

Have you tried the Atma? This amp sounds nothing like the Engl Fireball or Pink Taco.

I love the Mark V 25 after trying it out last month. If I needed an amp right now, I would get it. Probably will next year.

roccster,
Thanks for the confirmation that you have experienced similar "popping sounds" when switching power settings on your Atma.
The good news is that I primarily set it to 5w (home playing) and Modern voicing so there is no need for me to change these settings when powered up.
I am pleased that you are loving yours, and I do understand why! ;)
Cheers!

I gave up on low wattage amps for now, I bought a JMP-1 and split the preamp and power amp into 2 cases. Both cases are under significantly under 20 pounds and I get the tones I want.

Just got my V:25 today. What an awesome amp

I think I may get one even if I can't sell my Mark IV. The JP demo is stupid. But I have to remind myself that he often makes Marks sound awesome in vids and then I have trouble getting the same thing going in my house. But I'm still tempted because of that Crunch mode and the fact that the lower wattage amp will work better in my house.

wish I would have seen that video before I bought my atma (arriving Wednesday) The boogie sounds fantastic. Hope I didn't make a mistake?

First of all, the V:25 is still only two channels, Atma is 3. V:25 would have been great with some sort of mid boost switch making it kinda like 3 channels.
Second, thats one video, and one type of sound. If you are in to that saturated high gain, heavy type of amp, then why did you choose the Atma in the first place? I can´t recall seeing a single video where the Atma sounds like a cranked boogie rectifier.
Having that said, there are plenty of videos out there showing pretty much exactly what the Atma can do, and it is alot!
If you play alot of different styles I think you will be verry pleased with your purchase, but everything is subjective.

I´ve said it before, but the Atma has that sound and versatility that makes me wanna play it all the time, and I have had it for almost a year. To be able to just switch it on in the appartment and have a great sound is worth alot to me. And the 18w is more then loud enough (for me), and I have used it live, in rehearsal and in studio.

So GL and hope you like it as much as I do, if not I think you will have no problem selling it.

Just because an amp has EL84's that doesn't mean it's going to sound small. I had a 4-EL84 Cage Corsa that sounded twice as big as the Mark V I had at the time. I have not played the Mark V 25 yet but I suspect it has the same sonic footprint as the Rec25, which I thought was good for such a small amp. In fact, these amps are almost too small.

You are right, I guess I just do not care for the sound of el84 tubes regardless of what amp they are in.

Thanks I hear you- I guess its like the amp is on its way and I hope I like it. I watch a ton of videos and I know its impossible to know till you get it home. Yea I'm not a heavy metal guy so the atma should be me. Thanks again your words have helped my insecurities out- yes I have made the right chioce- damn it -lol

The Mark V 25 actually does have a mid-boost. If you watch the whole vid you can see where Randall tell John that the Mid knob functions normally from 0 to noon. And then, after that it becomes a mid boost.

Fair enough. They often have a mid presence that can be, different. Some EL84 amps can be great though. Komet 18, Cage Corsa, Matchless C30 and even the Vox AC30 is pretty awesome.

jamme61,

Congrats on your recent purchase of the ATMA! :D
As roccster has accurately and repeatedly mentioned, the Atma is a versatile and great sounding amp! I really like it too!
Be sure to check out all of its sonic possibilities upon receipt! IMO, you just purchased an excellent amp!

dfrattaroli and others,
Just to be clear.....the so called "Mid Boost" option on the MV25 is specific to Ch1, and is completely dependent upon how the "Mid Tone Knob" is set.
On any mode of Ch1, the "mid tone control knob" acts as a normal mid control up to the 12 o'clock position (i.e. straight up), but when set beyond that it also adds a nice mid gain boost.
This feature alone definitely adds to the versatility of great sound offerings in all MV25 Ch1 modes ONLY (not applicable to Ch2 modes), and is a feature that is not offered in the Big Mark V.
Indeed, it is a very cool and useful tone shaping tool offered on the MV25.
That said, I didn't want anybody to get an incorrect impression thinking that the MV25 offers a "footswitchable mid boost feature" because it does not.
Of course, one can certainly provide a "Mid Boost" or anything else to their hearts desire on the MV25 by setting the GEQ to taste and footswitching it in in any mode of either channel.

Hope this helps....
