the Bogner is sort of (at least in my mind) attempting to deliver a sort of grail tone that has been wanted for years by many. Sure you can say its just another plexi, and it may very well end up being just that..but there are a LOT of people that wanted Bogner to mod Marshalls again over the years and even other builders who offered copies or close approximations of his Snorkler circuit, but now the actual builder is building a take on that circuit himself.

And it doesn't hurt that Bogner's modded jcm recorded an iconic guitar tone that was very unique among Marshall tones.. Or that Bogner generally builds amazing amps.

What iconic tone was that?

BTW, what does the Helios deliver that the Goldfinger doesn't? I'm not being pissy or challenging and smirking; I'm just uneducated. Or I should say unnedukatid.

the difference between 50 and 100 watts is only a few decibels right? why not opt for the 100 watt then...? the 100 watt will feel and sound bigger than the 50 watt and have about the same level of volume...for the most part

Technically, a 100 watt power source that is actually putting out 100 watts is only 3 dB louder than a 50 watt power source that's actually putting out 50 watts.

But that's at FULL, constant power.

A 100 watt amp isn't putting out 100 watts of power at every volume/gain setting. The idea of a 50 watter vs 100 watter isn't about maximum power. It's usually about how early the power section will break up and clip. A 50 watter being the one that breaks up sooner. But you hit the nail on the head: it's more about feel and responsiveness than about volume. More power = bigger, stronger, better, faster. It's about soundstage, not volume level. Because if you really wanted earlier breakup and power amp clipping at lower volume, you'd get a 20 watter. Or 10. Or 8. But they will lack the feel of a larger amp.

To me, and this is just based on clips the Helios sounds more raw and aggressive than the Goldfinger. Both would be great amps to have in my opinion and while they probably cover similar ground you are going to get more of the Plexi style clean with the Helios and a pure clean with the Goldfinger. YMMV.

Jim, the amp loosley referred to above is the EVH Marshall of the old days. I believe Reinhold is responsible for the amp that started Eddie's "brown sound" kick. DOn't quote me on that though

Ttosh, after much thought, I may simply have to go for the big iron. Big iron is fun ;)

(Honestly I am still more jazzed about pushing a 50...and as per the 3dB difference, isn't 3dB considered doubly loud? As in, 123dB is 2x louder than 120dB. Maybe my sonic science is askew, but I thought this relationship was fact).

It's not about the volume difference Mo. Its about the low end, punch, and bigness of the tone that is very different between a 50 and 100 watter. 50 is plenty for a band mix and jamming but if you want that big tone and low end the 100 delivers what no 50 can.

Oh I hear ya... I was just talking about decibels. Thanks though. I just want one

I can only comment based on my own experience and 50 watts is plenty for me. The only time I noticed a major difference was when I had a single and a dual recto at the same time. The dual shit all over the single. That said the other guitar player in my band routinely gigs with 25 or 30 watt fender molding amp and it sounds great. The PA is the ultimate equalizer IMO. I think people get too hung up on the subtle details that nobody in a club is ever going to notice or care about.

If people have come up to me at gigs and told me that I totally ruled on guitar and could play amazingly well and ask me for lessons, then you know they are going to be clueless about tonal nuances.

Yo Jim, must be exciting this time of season, eh? Usually I am jazzed about the creeping snowline. But this year? I've checked out man - it'll be a different scene for me and mine in 6 weeks time ;)

Why all the fuss about wattage - don't you guys use these anymore?

Not to derail but yeah, getting stoked. Been dry for the most part but we are expecting a PNA - weather pattern for a few weeks which hopefully will deliver the goods. Just hope my re-injured ACL allograft holds up.

So, how many tendon repairs is that now between Mo, Jim and I,

Some truth to that, ain't there?

I was packing up my garage in preparation of the upcoming relocation. Pulled my ski boots out, and tried sticking my buggered ankle into one of my boots. Got it in there, started doing the buckles up, and realized man it wouldn't be a good year ahead if skiing was the only item on the menu. If it wasn't for this rather absurd and borderline insane concept of uprooting the family to spend a year in the tropics to surf, I'd be bummed knowing my ski year would be "tentative" on the basis of my ankle still being 60% of what it ought to be.

And this isn't even a "getting old" bitch and whine complaint. This is just a blow out that's still pissing me off

That said, physio said "Mo, all you need is some serious time in the sand, surf, salt and sun". So hey, I'm being a responsible person and following those orders

Hope you gents get on well with the healing. This I do.

Yep, that about sums up how my foot felt in the ski boot the other day too :hys:

Helios may be the first open uncompressed tone from bogner? I heard shiva, XTC and uber has a certain amount of compression to it?
