Be sure to watch the end of the video!

Steve Senes demonstrates how easy it is to dial in a sound similar to Eddie Van Halen's celebrated "Brown Sound". The amp is a Marshall DSL100 with the Senes Mod. All overdrive is from the amp & no overdrive pedals were used. Speakers used are Warehouse Guitar Speakers Veteran 30's & HM75's loaded in an X-pattern & loaded in a 1979 Marshall 4x12" cab. The cab is mic'd with (2) Sennheiser e609 Silver mics & recorded with Apple Logic Pro. Guitar used is an ESP LTD EC1000 w/Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge & 59 in the neck position.

This gain tone/Mod can be installed into several other amps Plexi reissues, JCM800s & many more!

Sounds great Trace!!

BTW - Still lovin' the Laney you did for me! Sounds huge!

Best DSL tone i have ever heard...makes me want to send one to trace. I had him do a 5150 years back, and although I moved on from the amp, the customer service was excellent.

Never liked the tone of any of the dsl's except the 401 combo but I must say that this one sounds very nice!

All of Ed's album tones are so different. Playing 1984 and Fair Warning riffs through an amp dialled in for a VH1 tone just sounds totally wrong, IMHO.

Sounds really good, what level are the mods on the amp in the demo?
You can buy minty DSL's for less than $600-$700 these days

Great player, cool tone. Listening on studio monitors and it doesn't actually sound like EVH's tone unless we are talking about his Soldano/5150 type tones.

Regardless, it sounds good, just not really that "brown" IMO. And I'm not even one of those EVH tone Nazi's either.

Thank you and I'm glad to hear you are still lovin' the Laney! :) I hope your weekend is going well and that this heat wave breaks soon! (holy hot batman--lol)

Thanks!
Trace

Thanks so much for the feedback guys!

I agree Ed's Brown Sound has evolved over the years. "Brown" has become a general term used to describe tones that span over the course of Ed's career. In some cases they are very different from one another but at the same time they have a common thread. It's a classic sound that many revere. It was not my intent to replicate a specific era of the Brown sound but rather to design a Mod to capture the tones-n-flavors that Steve likes, which are also tones that I myself enjoy.

While I felt the Mod had some EVH qualities, I didn't realize how close it could get until I saw the video that Steve posted on his Facebook page (I first saw it after the fact). If you check out some other clips from Steve it gives you a better sense of how versatile the amp is as it does allow the player to come through, which has always been very important to me. As such I thought we would post it to not only show the tones you can get but also to turn more people onto Steve's playing. I enjoy his playing and thought others might like it as well. This is one of Steve's original songs followed by a walk through video demo;

This is a Walk Through Demo
