Fawn was not uncommon from that period but if it’s in great shape another head shell could be a good idea for gigging. I would put 34’s in it though. Never did like a 6 knob Marshall with 6550’s.
I feel exactly the opposite lol 6550s are the tube to use for aggressive music, either hard rock or metal IMO.
Aree. Lots of good advice in this thread with those amps.

I grew up with the 2204 running a Boss SD and/or DOD 250 running through an old Marshall 4x12 and it just killed. When I hear clips like psychodave's, makes me regret trading that thing for a ADA MP1 but that's what we did back then. Further makes me wanna go track one down.

Hang onto it, try some new pre-tubes, bias it and start throwing OD's in front of it.

Anybody care to venture a guess as to values for 2203/2204 amps either JMP or JCM 800 ? Local prices seem stupid to me. 1200 and up is not unusual these days. I bought my first 2203 JMP for 400 bucks back in the day. I just passed on a Fawn 2204 combo with black backs at 1200... worn so much all the print on the control panel was worn off.

Got my '79 2203 for $1500 shipped about 15 months ago. It's pretty clean.

Regular 2203's are going for 1500-1600. I scored my Fawn for 1800 which was fair considering it still had the original GE6550's and the amplifier is in mint condition. The dude originally wanted 2100 but I talked him down.

I passed on an early model 2204 JCM800 for 1300 out the door of a local guitar center that was beat all to hell. The better the condition of these amplifiers, the more of a premium they are bringing it seems.

I use to be like this, then I gave the 6550’s a chance. I’m floored by how good they can sound.
