Exact same amp build, 50w vs 100w - any difference in tone?

Yeah. I have never cared for the switch
Follow up question if I may. Therefore if I'm considering a head that is 100w with a 50w switch, to the same head that is 50w native...The 50w would sound better than the 100 in 50w mode. Correct? I'm trying to make that decision right now on an amp. I understand that the 100w version is "best" more than likely, but I doubt I'll have much opportunity given I'm in Cali and don't have a flippin basement to rock out in.

I ask this absent the idea of an attenuator.

It seems that is what fusedbrain was insinuating if it is a pentode/triode switch. I personally dont love gimmicky shit on the amp. So i would just have an amp designed a certain way and use it.

I don't think there is a huge difference in volume for a 100 vs 50 watt. So if you need a lot of headroom, maybe go 100. But honestly, with most well designed circuits, i can roll with either one and be fine.

Let me ask this. Have you played a 50 watt and 100 watt amp?

Because i have never felt the need for an attenuator unless it is a non master volume amp

When no one else is home..yes. I mean, I can play it whenever I want but......Can I really? LOL.
My reason for this question is you aren't really going to get a quieter amp with a 50 watt, tbh

That is interesting and certainly challenges the assumption I was making. Thanks!
When i first got into guitar, my buddy told me a 100 watt head and 4x12 was too loud for bedroom. He was experienced and i trusted him.

But all it did was cost me more money, because i find those very suitable to a bedroom, so i had to get rid of the initial shit i bought instead of getting what i want in the first place.

So i try to give a realistic expectation of what a person needs. While 100 watts may not be too much for me at home, it can be for others. If 100 watts is too much, so is 50 watts.

That makes sense. The 100w head would also give you more flexibility when playing out I surmise. I'm not new to guitar. I am new to trying to be any good at it and aspiring to play with like minded individuals.

Oh yeah. I was just relaying my story. But what i didnt say is that you are lucky because you already have a 100.watt at your house, so it takes away from the wondering if a 50 watt will work. I wasn't insinuating you are beginner.

I am liking the idea lately of just buying 100 watt amps, but pulling two tubes to have them running "50 watts", and then I've got a backup set of tubes on hand. :p
