I always laugh a bit when folks are overly concerned with what other people used, you can buy every single piece of ear someone else has and not sound at all like that guy

I have witnessed this as well in the past few years. Just to be a card carrying club member.
I used to have a crapload of stuff. Dont really have much left these days...but I play the shit out of it.
I thought those shoes were Prince's until I saw the Quiet Riot case.... As for tone if Randy didn't quadruple track just about everything his tone on the records would have been even more ass. One of the best players of our time but his tone was worse than Paul Gilberts. He still is my favorite player of all time and I was lucky enough to see him live. In fact the original Def Leppard opened so I got to see Pete Willis on guitar with them. It was a good night.

His would have still kicked ass regardless of double tracking. I thought he had a great live tone. The first Ozzy cd tone was a bit drastic but the 2nd cd was cool.
He used what was available at the time. The MXR stuff was great and worked. The main thing IMO was the MXR 10 Band EQ. It could make a Distortion+ have all sorts of tone ability. I used one back in the day. It was my secret weapon.
Just to be clear, I think the doubletracking worked against the phat tone because of phase cancellation. Double tracking is a beach and in my opinion, wasn't exactly a science for distorted electric guitars in the early 80's.
As Carl said, his live tone was good. "single tracked."
That's where most of my pedal and order came from lol bought the MXR distortion + because of him and everything else is stuff he had in the same order lol
