Hmm, that's a long time with one amp man, you must REALLY dig that thing. Yeah, I think I know where you're at though. I had mine a little over a year, and I really loved the voicing of the amp a lot. Loved that mid grind, always reminded me of Cantrell's tone. The one sticking point for me was the lowend, I just never got it exactly where I wanted for the more modern tones. I liked the excursion on the "L" setting, where it sounded the fullest to me, but it wasn't tight enough there for my tastes. It got tight enough in the "T" setting, but then I felt like it lost a lot of it's lowend girth and punch. I tried external boosts with the internal off, internal on/off, different cabs/speakers, 6550/KT88 tubes, pre tube cocktails, etc, and never got it exactly where I wanted. The CCV gets there straight in IMO, and I'm a huge boost junkie.metalmaniac93":2gnrest9 said:Erock":2gnrest9 said:I think if you love the fluidity and mid growl/grind of the XTC, you would love the CCV too. You can hear Bogner's influence on Mark's designs IMO, at least with the CCV I owned. The CCV reminded me a lot of the XTC, with more emphasis on the mid growl, and a tighter more percussive lowend.
Erock, well that is what I am talking about, more emphasis on the mid growl with a tighter more percussive low end. I cannot seem to get enough of that out of the 101B and I am not knocking the 101B since it is a damn great amp. If I did not think so, I would of got rid of it a long time ago. I have had it since 2000.
As an aside, if you loved the 101B that much, another amp I think you should check out is the 20th Anniversary XTC. I have one loaded with E34L, and it seems like he really got it right with this amp IMO.
