I think if you love the fluidity and mid growl/grind of the XTC, you would love the CCV too. You can hear Bogner's influence on Mark's designs IMO, at least with the CCV I owned. The CCV reminded me a lot of the XTC, with more emphasis on the mid growl, and a tighter more percussive lowend.

Erock, well that is what I am talking about, more emphasis on the mid growl with a tighter more percussive low end. I cannot seem to get enough of that out of the 101B and I am not knocking the 101B since it is a damn great amp. If I did not think so, I would of got rid of it a long time ago. I have had it since 2000.
Hmm, that's a long time with one amp man, you must REALLY dig that thing. Yeah, I think I know where you're at though. I had mine a little over a year, and I really loved the voicing of the amp a lot. Loved that mid grind, always reminded me of Cantrell's tone. The one sticking point for me was the lowend, I just never got it exactly where I wanted for the more modern tones. I liked the excursion on the "L" setting, where it sounded the fullest to me, but it wasn't tight enough there for my tastes. It got tight enough in the "T" setting, but then I felt like it lost a lot of it's lowend girth and punch. I tried external boosts with the internal off, internal on/off, different cabs/speakers, 6550/KT88 tubes, pre tube cocktails, etc, and never got it exactly where I wanted. The CCV gets there straight in IMO, and I'm a huge boost junkie.

As an aside, if you loved the 101B that much, another amp I think you should check out is the 20th Anniversary XTC. I have one loaded with E34L, and it seems like he really got it right with this amp IMO.

Erock, I dig it somewhat, but have the same issues you had with it, but I wanted a little bit open tone with a mid growl. I have tried pedals in front of it and that worked a little bit. I also was looking at the 20th Anniversary XTC, but when I went on this site and heard all of the raves about the Cameron, I decided to look into it. Then I heard that one clip and I was impressed. I know it is just a clip and playing one would be the best way to go.

I like the tone here.

Has that aggressive edge and believe it or not has a similar sounding treble to the Cornford MK. I love the highs on the Cornford. Silky. Mark C said if he didn't play his amps the Cornford is what he would be playing. Just ask Josh (JCJ). Probably why he finally checked out Cornford and fell in :inlove: Ignore my pizza box if you don't get it. There are still allot of guys who are stressed over the bad deals that went down that Brad is trying to help fix. They must be stressed about it still. The pizza was one for them  No disrespect to anyone but I though it was :hys: Especially his pic in the left corner. Sorry Mark. All in fun. :rawk:

I would definitely try before you buy. You have two great amps, but if they do not do it for you then moving on is the thing to do. I have not heard that many CCV clips that i honestly like compared to the Marshalls Mark modified with the Aldrich and Jose mods. But hey those are my ears and internet clips so buying or not buying based on them really is not the way to go. For that amount of coin there are so many options out there to get you that growl you are talking about though IMHO. A lot of the Cameron owners will tell you the feel is the selling point along with the tone and I know the Cameron Aldrich I had the please of playing for a while was excellent. Good luck with your decisions, selling two great amps to fund one is a tough choice.

I prefer the Cameron modified Marshall's over the CCV's that I've heard/played myself. And the loud volumes that some claim where the CCV shines over a Modded Marshall are soo loud it's not an issue IMHO. Funny thing is everyone cranks up amps way louder at ampfests than what most any soundman would let you use in most regular sized clubs.

Disclaimer *** I've never played a CCV or Cameron modded Marshall *** but as far as clips go, I prefer his modded Marshalls over the CCV as well. I hear what people are saying about the CCV having a strong Bogner influence (smoother, more growl) whereas the modded Marshalls have a brighter, more old school rawness (duh, they're Marshalls !) You can't blame Mark or any other builder for not getting the exact tone of an old Marshall when using new parts.

I think it was PsychoDave who posted some CCV/Jose Cameron A/B clips a while ago and sure enough the CCV sounded bigger, warmer, fatter while the Marshall had the brilliant upper end zing that only a Marshall seems to have.

And you are completely right on the volume issue. Many times using some higher wattage or efficiency speakers is a great way to enhance the headroom of an old amp without having to mod it for more headroom which may affect its tone at any volume.

Well it would be nice if I could try it before I decided to buy it. It is a lot of money to through down on an amp I never played through. But, where in the heck will I be able to try one? Now if I lived on the West Coast, that could be a possibility, but I live in the Chicago area. As far as the sound goes, I like what I hear so far and it sounds way more aggressive with that empthasized mid growl and more open than the XTC 101B.

there are some east coast guys with CCV's gotta drive a little though.

The new one may be a little different than the older models. We do not know this for sure yet. Different builder, different parts.

What more do you need to know?

I'd need to know what it actually sounds like in a room when I play it myself. I'm sure it's a great sounding amp, and Mark always sounds good for sure. But clips like this never make me want to sell an I amp I already have and love. Not for this kind of coin anyway.

Plus, I'm at a stage where I'm so frickin' tired of trying new amps. Right now, everything kind of sounds the same so I'd be a bad judge even in the room with it.

Yeah, I do understand and I need to rephrase my original question. I loved the Bogner 101B for the longest time, but in the past few years I have not played it much and have been favoring my Engl Savage, so I just was searching for something similar yet different in the voicing. I suppose I could look into the Bogner 20th Anniversary Head, XTC Classic or the Splawns? I know I could try both of those somewhere close. Make N Music is only an hour or so away for me.

I had A 20th Ecstacy. Great amp but I do not hear a CCV in it. Not even close.

Yeah, I figured that. What are the differences between the 20th, the pre-2004 XTC and the CCV. Have your tried the Splawns like the Nitro or Quick Rod?
