Looking to purchase a Soldano 4x12 slant cab no sure which speaker to go with either the Celestion greenback or the Celestion vintage 30 I play slot of early Van Halen I thought about going with the vintage 30,supposedly Eddie used a combination of greenbacks and jbl d120 speakers to record Van Halen 1 so I’m thinking that the vintage 30 would make up for the brighter edge of the jbl d120 speakers

I'd go with greenbacks - they generally work much better for those tones, depending on the amp of course.

I'll tell my opinion, based on a very recent experience with both speakers. The V30 will be tighter and keep up with the pick attack. Greenbacks do sound more balanced, but they are slightly behind your pick attack. There's a little drag with GBs that you have to be okay with. The bottom end is also not quite as tight at the V30. I think those details with the feel are often overlooked, but but very important to consider. I prefer V30s.

I have a EVH 5150 III cab loaded with the EVH Celestion which is great cab do the Celestion greenbacks seem brighter then the EVH Celestion

If I'm going through the work to drag a 4x12 around, I do not want any speaker with less than 100dB/1W/1M efficiency. What's the point of all that weight just to be quiet?

In a 5w 1x12 amp I was trying to make quiet I might consider an EVH.

The two speakers are similar. I've played them both, but not side by side.

Are we talking old frontloaded Soldano 4x12 or the new one? I don't like M25s in frontloaded cabs.

What amp will you be using? I used all '90s reissue M25s in my 4x12 for a few years but now I'm liking two M25s paired with two '90s V30s.

He used Greenbacks. He used JBLs. There's nothing in a V30 that resembles anything in a JBL.
Get a pair of GBs, and get a pair of JBL 123s. D120s are hard to find and $$$ when you do. 123s are way more attainable. Sure, some idiots think they command D120 prices but if you're patient, you can find some for reasonable cash.
Put them in a cab and you've got a head start on VH1 tone.

Racerxrated I know Edward used greenbacks I just saying if the v30s would substitute for the sound of jbl d120 that’s all

I experimented with lots of speakers in my newer Soldano 4x12.
I love V30s, but 4 of them in that cab was too much. Too loud, too harsh.
4 Greenbacks were great, but I preferred those in my old Marshall 4x12.

I ended up using V30s and Scumback BM75-LDs in an x-pattern for the Soldano cab. It has the bite of the V30s, but the volume and harshness is smoothed out and complimented by the grind and richness of the Scummies.

I didn't like v30/gb mix in either 4x12. Something good is cancelled out with that combo, imo.

If you just wanna sound like Van Halen and do old rock tunes get the greenbacks, otherwise go with V30's. The more recent UK made V30's sound pretty damn good, they have none of that fizz that a lot of the post 2004 V30's have, and don't sound spikey to me at all.
