Mine were in the two 68 Marshall cabs I have.

How do you like the Scumbacks? Do you have the low watt or 65 watt versions? The 65 watt is what I was looking at.
I have the low wattage. I like them a lot. Until now, I think they were the only one offering a 55hz greenback style speaker.

I have 2 68s on the top row of my 68 straight cab. 2 69 1221s on the bottom.

I also have a 1977 slant with BB T1511s. Unreal aggressive tone. I didn't get the BB thing(had 2 H30, 1 M25 cab) until I bought this one.
T1511s are my fave GB.

Nice! Why did you go with the 1511s on the top and the 1221s on the bottom? I was thinking about doing that, if I were to mix the 2 in the same cab. Was wondering what your reason was instead of the 1221s on top.

Were they always a standard model? Not that I looked around back then, just thought they were a pre rola thing that eventually ran its course and was replaced with something else.
Yeah, they were just the least popular of the big 4. They survived well into the 70's, I think have a pair of blackback M55's from maybe 76?

Also for anyone curious, they compare pretty favourably with the earlier, Pulsonic (014) cones - but the those old babies tend to win every shootout without too much trouble.

Cool thanks for the info. Ran mine for many years, then the tones changed and got bright. Had two reconed by a place that said they had a pre rola process. They sound terrible, super bright. Sold the rest off and kinda have been looking for replacements since.

Thanks. I wondered cause in the H magnet series he specifically mentions the 014 cones whichh is what my T1511 had.
So I think that all of his 55hz cones are the "014" cones. The only differences are the magnets for the M vs H and the paper voice coil vs the Nomex voice coil.

The 1511s have less of a mid spike than the 1221s, so I put the 1511s on top to hear if that would mix better. So far so good. I like it. The 1511s, I prefer their tone more than the 1221s so being the top pair I hear them in a more dominant way.
If that makes sense lol. I thought I'd try it this way vs X pattern.

Anyone try these new speakers at NAMM? I'm curious if they are bright and aggressive or dull mud machines.

Cool, that's pretty much what I was thinking, too, that the 1221s might overpower the 1511s if they were on top. Thanks for letting me know your experience with them!

Are these what came in 60s Marshall cabs?

Some, probably. No personal experience and I'm not sure when they were introduced. They were the bass version of the G12M Greenback and probably the rarest of the 4 main types: bass/treble with medium/heavy magnet combinations.

They were the first 'Bass' speakers; when you see an old Marshall cab with Bass emblem in the upper L corner of the grill(looking at it straight on) that cab would have had the T1511s. They are 25w M magnet bass or 014 cones. The very first ones in 66/67 would have been only 20w but those are the most desirable/collectable Celestions and super hard to find. They also blew up quicker since they used the paper voice coils. In mid 67 they went to nylon coils and became the 25w speakers that we still use today.

There were of course other Celestions at that time, like the more popular/recognizable T1221 which are the lead cone GBs and the most used today, also the H magnet 25s in 66/67 then increased to 30w with the same nylon coil to become the H30 GB. Hendrix was reputed to use the H30s mostly live due to the higher power handling. But he used many different amps, Fender and Marshall, and cabs from both companies.

Cool thanks. Planned on getting the 65 watters for my 212…20’s for the 412’s. Everytime I see an old vid of mine using them, miss that tone.

And different cones.

Yep, roughly, Greens were Pulsonic, Creams were RICs, and Blacks were KM. At least I think that's close. Looked like pre-Rola had labels than said 75Hz, but the cone code says differently, 102 014 was a 55Hz cone. At least according to the info on that site.
