I put new super slinky's on my guitar a couple days ago and the high e broke today, awesome!! would you just put a new string on, breaking up a new pack of strings, or replace all of them? I want to play really bad so I gave serious thought to just throwing one on, but my OCD got the best of me. I could not open a pack and use just one string. I have to replace them all and it will take a while. Bummer. anyhow, time to change strings. I really do love new strings though!

what would you do, take one from another pack leaving it a 5 string pack? or replace them all??

Haha, I've gone through this a bunch of times.

I change out the whole set if I have to break up another set to get the replacement high E. For one, strings are cheap. 5-6 bucks for a set isn't going to break the bank. Secondly, I end up having 5 strings sitting around that will never get used and will be thrown away eventually anyway.

I found the solution though. I order 6 packs of high E's so I can just grab one and throw it on without breaking up a whole set.

As long as it broke at the clamp on the bridge just unwind a little of the string at the tuning head and clamp it in and play on it for awhile. change them all at a later time when you feel like it.

If the set of strings is more than a month old replace them all.

Otherwise just do the one.

I guess I'm just OCD too. But I like a full fresh set.

Now, if they were $40 a set, I'd be compromising...

Why wait around, replace the one string and get on the internet asap and order some singles, spares to have on hand. I always keep plenty of sets and singles of the high E.

I get 6 packs of .10's or .11's on Amazon for 5-6 bucks.

I only change all strings before a gig or major guitar surgery. Otherwise, trim and reuse.

+1 Exactly. Unless the strings are fucked of course, in which case, replace them all..

Back in da 80's i was such a starving artist that i actually would tie broken strings in a knot and reuse if possible ...truth.

I leave the strings long enough on the wind that if they broke....I just unclamped and gave more slack...
locked it in the string block/re tuned. And kept playing.

I get strings somewhat cheap again, I was getting them at bananas at large, the local music store and they were charging a shit load for them, like 8 bucks for a pack of super slinky's!! then they started price matching and we just google them and what ever the cheapest price online is, that's what they sell them for so I have been getting them for about 4.50 a pack, not bad. I love super slinkys! I have tried all the others.
