I'm not in a band these days and between my job, renovating my house, and going back to college in my 40's to finish up a degree I started 20 years ago I don't have a lot of time to play as much as I once did. I mostly play now for my own enjoyment, hobby, unwinding. Its become a much more secondary activity for me but I still try to sit down and indulge as much as I can. I'll never give it up.

My Mesa RA sits unused most of the time, not sure why I even bought it....way more amp than I need given the situation I've described above. Seriously thinking about downsizing. I love tube power, just don't need that much power at this point. Not sure what direction to go in though as far as a rig. I'd like something that works across several fronts....practice (especially with headphones), recording, but also "in the room" live playing as well. I do still get together with friends and play sometimes. I definitely don't need 100 watts, or really even 50, as long as I have decent headroom. Not a big fan of the attenuator on my RA though.

Here's a few routes of thought about:

Modeller + a power amp of some kind (preferably tube) + the cabinet I already have. That would facilitate being able to grab the modeler and a pair of headphones and play anywhere in my house, away from the cab/amp set up, but if I wanted to play "live" in the room I could hook up and do so.

My pedal board + something like the Torpedo CAB + maybe some additional drive/preamp pedal(s) to cover not using an amp/modeler when going headphone/interface + just get a smaller/lower powered amp to run the pedalboard through for when I need to play "live".

An amp like the Mesa Mark V 25. Easy to tote around (like the modeler idea) + my pedalboard = basically the same idea as the first, just using a single amp and my own effects instead of a modeler.

Anyone else been in this situation and have thoughts/advice/input?

I'll always have one tube amp..just picked up a small Jubilee combo. Perfect for me..I gig maybe 6-8 times a year and as I'm 48 that'll probably see that drop more. Anyway there's a new product that just came out..Atomic Amplifire? Its all in a pedal, maybe 10 amp sims and a few fx..kinda like what Axe fx or Kemper should put out as a scaled down more affordable version. Dropping 2k isn't in the cards for me for a modeler..but the Atomic is 599$. They're just coming out so I'm waiting to hear some feedback....

Well I am kind of in your situation. Trying to sell my amp atm....

May not be the best tone in the world but everything you described to me sounds like you need the BIAS app.

Not sure if you have an iphone or not but it does everything you mentioned pretty well.

You would need a power amp to push a 4x12 but it will do it pretty well with some power.

Worked for me in band situations and that is what I'm going back to.

Play with headphones as well. Overall a pretty good unit.

I just bought an axe fx because my wife and I have twins on the way. We also have a two-year-old. So as it is I haven't played a gig in over five years. Nor do I see myself playing out anytime soon. I currently have EVh 5150 III but I will most likely sell it if I really get along with the axe fx.

I got the axe fx to Play thru monitors or through headphones

I've thought about an AxeFx, but I just can't bring myself to spend that kind of money on digital gear. Probably stupid thinking, but that's just how I think in terms of digital vs analog/tube value. I'm more in the Digitech/Line 6 price camp on digital, whereas I don't mind spending bigger money on quality tube amps.

Geez. Depressing. :aww:

  OK....how so exactly? Didn't mean to bum you out man. I'm certainly not upset or down about it, and don't plan on shedding any guitars. Just the big amp...and buying some other toys that just work better for my current situation.

I don't play in bands anymore and the only reason i don't sell my evh 50 is because sounds great at low volume and i can crank it once in awhile(great neighbors lol). A tube Power amp and a modeler it's a great option

That's how I leaning right now...just trying to narrow it down to what modeler. Tube power amp is a must though when I want to go through the cab. Gots to have teh toobs! A few weeks ago a friend of mind brought his POD over, wasn't even the HD...was an older XT if I recall. He didn't feel like lugging his Marshall combo and just ran the POD through my KRK monitors. It sounded ok, but then for the hell of it I decided to run it through my RA-100 power section, into the effects return. Kinda pissed me off a little because I could practically nail the sound of the red channel on the RA by using the POD's Recto model into my tube power section and cab. Not completely sold on the idea of a L6 gear (had bad luck in the past with them) but I have to admit to myself, it sounded good through the tube power.

I don't have an iPhone or iPad, currently windows machines and Android phone. I was just discussing the whole iPad thing with someone else here in another thread. It might be a good option for me, at least for silent practicing around the house, or recording without having to mic up. I've read and heard good things about BIAS, and I'm always feeling envious of all those cool guitar apps available for i-devices.

The atma and mini recs/mark would be my choices if I were in this situation. That said, the axe fx sounds more and more appealing.

line6 Amplifi sounds great, great looking amp will look good in any room and is Bluetooth enabled and hundreds on models.

Probably cause so many guys are basically not really playing anymore...

It had gotten to the point where trying to play in a band was the depressing part for me. Now I can just play....for me and my own enjoyment.

I've thought about it a few times, since I've been busy with other things etc. and have barely been playing.
I just got back into recording, and remembered that the music equipment I bought was to keep it for life. I bought them to create my ultimate guitar sound and enjoy guitar playing, so I've sold off what I don't use much of and will make do with the rest.

Keep your amp. You may not ever get another and may miss the joy of moving air with a real amp. Add a modeler when you can.

A Mesa Mark I, II, III, or IV series amplifier would be the best choice IMO. Their not too large, and should ever decide to gig, you won't need anything more than a mic. If weight is an issue, go with short head and a 1x12 cabinet.
