Could it be that the offending 6505+ that you are saying was crappy could just have improved with a hotter bias? Maybe the range it biased is too cold? I have heard that about peavey.

I didn't have a bias mod.

I sat in on a gig using that amp through the 4x12 greenback loaded marshall I have incoming. Thing sounded fan-fucking-tastic.Crunchy, angry, not cold or sterile in any way.

There's the missing link. Your mojo rubbed off on it HAHAHAAH!

IMO, there's an actual SLO, and there's everything else. If you're not going to get the real thing, I think Jet Citys are your best bet for a bargain. I don't think there's anything substantially better in between (if you're looking for THAT sound), so you might as well save some cash.

The only exception to that might be a Deliverance. I had a 120 at the same time as an SLO, and was pretty surprised how close I could get them at certain settings. I can't comment on the 60 from personal experience, but what the poster above said makes a lot of sense. Either way, Deliverances are killer and relatively affordable (at least compared to an SLO).

Well let's figure this out because I see these come up for sale in the 650 range to 750 all the time and I am interested in grabbing one if the price were right. Then again I can ask just to plugin and try it. My cab has a mix of weber legacy and RI greenbacks and I think this amp on ththe crunch channel would sound quite good. Although I would love a SLO I don't play enough to pay more for the real deal. If I had the cash though, for sure I would grab a SLO!

Obviously! I should charge to handle people's 6505s. Matt's Special Mojo Mod.

I can't see that video above that's comparing the 5150 (or was it a 6506?) and the SLO, but I'm guessing it's that Sgt. Shred video that's been floating around youtube for several years now. That video doesn't portray an accurate tale of those amps. #1. It's youtube, and he's using the mic on his camera. #2. He's playing at conversation levels. That comparison is useless. Turn both amps up, and that's where the difference between the two becomes undeniable.

This. End thread. You guys can sit and tout YouTube videos as "See! My 6505/5153/blah blah blah IS just like an SLO!!" Gimme a break. I've played all those amps before and owned a few. Its not even close, other than the fact they're guitar amps and have a ton of gain. The difference is undeniable. Listen to Rezas clips...those are great clips but unless you are or have been in front of an SLO pushing some air you won't get it. Yeah they're 2500 used vs 500 for a 6505 but if you want that tone just get one.

If I wanted a Soldano, I'd get a Soldano. If that is way out of budget and I just couldn't control the GAS, I think one of the Soldano designed amps would be best bet... I'd go Jet City in that scenario. It could probably be upgraded after the fact to be even more in spec.

Buying a Recto or 5150 to get an SLO doesn't make much sense, IMHO, and will just leave you wanting.

I haven't seen ANYONE saying the Peavey sounds the SAME as a SLO. Just that its in the same BALLPARK. Which it sure sounds like it is.

My main point is that videos are NOT a reliable way to judge things..but I also know its sometimes the only way. Other than taking someone's opinion. Before I bought my first SLO I saw a comparison video between an HR50 and an SLO. Sounded exactly the same on YouTube. I owned an HR100 for a year. Liked it. Took the plunge and bought an SLO, and it completely blew the doors off of the HR100. Yeah the mids were in the ballpark..lol..and it had the Soldano name but these were supposed to be very close to one another....the SLO was THAT much better to me that I laugh at all the HR comparisons. HRs, 6505s, 5150s....nice amps man but they aren't that close. OP you'll be happier saving up some cash and finding a used one. Trust me.

Well here's some pig slop for ya! Crunch channel with ts9 in front, mxr 10 band eq in loop. v30 and g12h30 70 anni speaker. 6505+. It can get heavy if you want. And I'm sure others can make it sound better. No other eq, fx, mastering, just a raw recording of pig slop.

FWIW, I'm not knocking the 5150. It can't be beat for the price. Having owned both, the Peavey has its place and so does the SLO. But, IMHO, the SLO is on a completely different level.

I second what another reply said - Jet City. They were designed by the same guy, and if it's not close enough to the tone you want there are several easy mods to get it closer to a true SLO tone.

heard the jet city's are a bit noisy though?
I really dislike noisegates (also had the decimator g string II, but still didn't like it.)

A few years ago, I had the SLO bug and had 3 SLO style amp I was demoing back to back:
1) EVH 5150 III
2) Jet City JCA100
3) A Custom Jaded Faith SLO module which I christened," The Douchey Douchbag". (The module's faceplate and cosmetics were based on the Metasonix Funcking Fucker, but underneath, it was all SLO).

The Jet City sounded nothing like a SLO. and I sold it after about two weeks. The Jaded Faith module was dead on! However, it was a little noisy. The EVH was the most fun to play. If you want Pure SLO tone (think Lynch/ DeMartini), get a MTS amp and have Rob at Jaded Faith make you an SLO module. If you choose not to go the MTS route, I'd go for a 5150 of some variety.

Don't write off an Avenger or HR. Although they don't sound exactly like an SLO but they still got a bit more clarity than other options. At ~$1000 used they are great bangs for the bucks.

GOOD SLO'S ARE NOT CHEAP &
CHEAP SLO'S ARE NOT GOOD!!!
