Cheap SLO alternative thoughts?

I will add that a VHT/Fryette Deliverance 60 came closer than anything else I've had, way closer than an HR100. The D60 has clarity like an SLO. You can find those used for 1k. Don't come up often though. The 120 has so much low end that it wasn't as close as the 60 to me.

Hey Reza, your SLO sounds wicked! In this case I would have to agree, save for 8 months more and get a used one. I am sure with a proper bias they all sound quite close to one another. Sometimes it is just worth getting the real deal. Have heard 6505+ get close but end of the day when they are back to back, you notice the clarity of the soldano. You can't unhear what you have heard and to me there is a difference.

Ya got that right! my 6505+ does not sound like that... That SLO's wicked!

if you want cheap amp closest to soldano your best choice is jet-city, or you can try to find used yamaha T50.

it's true that lot's of modern hi-gain amps are based on SLO lead circuit, but they are heavily moded. I.E. Old 2ch DR Red/modern channel is exactly the same circuit like SLO, but there are also other variables that define sound - OT, tube FX loop before tone stack etc..

You're crocked, bro! The peavy and EVH sound nothing like the SLO. How could they? They're not $4400!!!!!

I remember that video.. LOL :D
Made my SLO gas go away for good.

Might not be the 2-3 k difference but the difference is there. I def. prefer the SLO. When you factor in you might score a used SLO for 2500$, the difference becomes about what, 1700-1800$? Up to you at that point if you feel there is a difference enough. Don't get me wrong, I think the 6505+ is a fine sounding amp especially on the crunch channel but in straight up comparison, I would take the SLO on tone alone. I like clarity though.

Yeah, I remember that vid too.. that's one of the reasons I bought one.. (6505+). I guess I got a dud... mine does not sound like that. Different tubes? tried boxes of em. Different speakers? take your pick.. EVH, v30, g12h30 70 anni, t75, Sheffield 1290.. BUT my old 5150 did sound like that.

Close enough for me. The Peavey sounded thicker to me.

I had a 6505+ and have an EVH. The 6505+ sounded like the one in the video pretty much. I didn't have the right cab for it either and it sounded great.

Soldano HR25 sounds fantastic and SLO-like. I've played one and I have and had a few SLOs.
Yeah my experience as well. I have an SLO (#90203) in the cave at home, and while I was at GC Hollywood during NAMM -- they had an HR 25 for $1400. It sounded just like the real thing IMO, granted I didn't turn it up past 1. Great value though, for sure.

Yeah man, I had zero issues with that amp. I had it running thru a Splawn 4x12 which is tuned pretty much only to Splawn amps. If I had it now, running on my Mesa OS 4x12 I bet it would sound a lot better. My kid has a 5150 combo, that thing is great too.

What was wrong with yours? How did it sound "different"?

If I use the same settings as the vid, It's raspy and lifeless. Stale is the best way to describe I guess. No matter what power tubes (JJ, TAD 6l6gc STR, Peavey USA made super 6 6l6GC STR387, EH6l6, etc..) and bias it up right it has the same sound. I even tried the Peavey super 7s that came out of my old Rockmaster in the preamp and still the same. I've tried every preamp tube you can think of. EI, Telefunken, Mullard, old and new, Tungsol, JJ, and on and on.. I'll make a clip and send it to ya. I'll use a v30 and E609 mic.

Ok. Send it over. That's weird. Like any amp, it's not for everybody but raspy and lifeless aren't 2 adjectives that immediately pop into my head.

Could it be that the offending 6505+ that you are saying was crappy could just have improved with a hotter bias? Maybe the range it biased is too cold? I have heard that about peavey.

I didn't have a bias mod.

I sat in on a gig using that amp through the 4x12 greenback loaded marshall I have incoming. Thing sounded fan-fucking-tastic.Crunchy, angry, not cold or sterile in any way.
