Here’s a clip of RT member PK Rippers band Slaughter Xtroyes. Good stuff
Hey Paul, I hope you don’t mind me posting this.

I really like old mercyful fate and king diamond. This had a lot of that type feel. I liked it. Any idea where this was and how he kept that Kahler in tune?

You can keep a kahler in tune with chapstick, lubing the pivots.

It was filmed at a festival in Germany. Maybe Paul will chime in about the Kahler

Great post, Paul! Long story short, Slauter Xstroyes was/is a Chicago band that were around in the 80's up until they broke up around 1990. They were a wrecking ball to say the very least. One of the best metal bands to ever come out of Chicago. They were very freaky and very much ahead of their time. People either loved them, or were freaked out by them, because they could take you waaaaay out of your comfort zone. Truly a tragically unknown and underrated band. In 1985, they released an album called "Winter Kill. Only 500 copies were printed and it is an underground classic. Years later they released another album called "Free the Beast" that's also amazing. Any fan of Mercyful Fate type stuff would love both albums. Fast forward to 2010, they were contacted by the dude who runs the "Up the Irons" festival in Greece and asked to come out of retirement. Three of four members agreed and along with old friend and new singer Steve Reimer, they played Greece twice since, Germany's "Keep it True" festival, and have been semi active here in Chicago. I saw them for the first time in '85 when I was in 8th grade and they blew my head off. To this day they're still one of my favorite bands and Paul (PK Ripper) is one of my best friends. They tried to do a new album, but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be. Anyway, thought I'd share a little background because nobody here would know who the hell these guys were/are, and they should.

That live video was actually from around 6-7 years ago.

Wow that's awesome!

I love that older Mercyful Fate & King Diamond sound!

Does anyone know the guitar rig used for that concert?

Thanks for the post Paul

The Kahler has always been my tremolo of choice especially when I was younger. Back then I couldn't play a Floyd equipped guitar for more than a song or two without breaking strings. Also, I only like trems that float so a Kahler sounded better to me than a floating Floyd because it didn't flutter while just playing. Now a days I can and do play on any floating trem. I'm not sure what changed but I'm guessing I'm not as heavy handed anymore.

As for keeping the Kahler in tune I never used chapstick on mine. For lubrication I would use One Lube synthetic or clock oil but mostly I just kept them clean. I would take them all apart and clean them at every string change which is a pain in the butt. After every gig I'd have to clean them or the rollers lock up from dried sweat. Over all they can stay in perfect tune if they are in perfect shape which very hard to keep up on.

The Amp that I used was the Marshall JCM 900 high gain dual reverb 4100.

Signal Chain:

Zola Parts guitar from the 80's. Maple body and Neck with ebony board equipped with Bill Lawrence XL500L's

Pedal board with a volume pedal, Maxon GE601, MAXON OD808 and a chorus pedal of some sort for clean parts

Hell yea, good recap of an interesting band. I remember when a guy named John Stewart sang for them and Steve Reimer was singing in a band called Emerald Faith. Good times from a good scene I'm glad to have come from!

Yeah UltraGary, that's Reimer from EF in the video! They invited Stewart back for the reunion, but he declined. He's got a life in Vegas, and I don't think he's even involved in music anymore. That guy had a unbelievable voice. Truly a phenomenal vocalist. It's a shame he's not active. Not really a replaceable singer, but Steve has done a great job of it. Were you around for their shows back then? The first time I saw them was in '85 with Emeralds Faith at Roller Wheels and that show changed my life.

Roller Wheels!... Yes I was. I went to shows there all the time. I also used to see EF at a club out in Harvey called Just Angels, who used to let us young kids in. Brian Schrofek (sp?) was a really good guitarist too (RIP). I follow the memorial page for him on FB that his mom runs.

Ah yes, the old Just Angels. Then it was The City. I played there in my adolescent years.  Wasn’t the owners name Rick?

Good question, I probably only went there 5-10 times. Who knows...we probably were standing right next to each other sizing up some guitar player at some point.

Yeah, I saw a few shows at Roller Wheels. I remember seeing Pantera (Chicago's), Viacuda, and a few others I can't recall. I was never at Just Angels. How about Condesa Del Mar? Ever hang there? They had some killer shows there.
