Love Brian’s tone journey!
I’ve been using Gotham cables for all the line/rack cabling, great stuff too.

the racks he and his crew put together at Lab Systems in Buena Park back in the mid 80s were my first exposure to big stereo rigs, thanks to my brother Zach being totally hip to cutting edge pro gear early on, scoring all the killer gear since high school and living 15 minutes away from that tone mecca!

awesome, you are a goldmine of resource
never seen before this big Arc EQ

pretty crazy it came with a display that looked like a security tv monitor screen!

pretty sure the mullet guy playing in the demo is shawn tubbs. check out the tasty ej like clean swells/tones and his lead tone he has in that era playing for the violet burning

i ran sound and played with some of the members in that band (except shawn).

R2D2 is alive…and everything works!
had to hear the eventide so since i finally had a free day i got on a bender and cranked out 6 cables, including a tricky adapter to connect the two L/R XLR outputs of the H3K to the rack mixer via one stereo TRS 1/4”. got the pedal tray wired, velcro’ed and powered up, replaced all the audio cables that were either low budget or way too long and heavy. dressed stuff the best i could for now.

i have to pick up some shorter IEC-Nema power cables to reduce bulk,
but so far though headphones the H3k sounds legendary. the Heaven preset is really sweet!

Just bumped into some old (poor) photos and thought I would share here for fun; this is I think the last time I took the "big rack rig" out, must have been 10-15 years ago:

Not so much space so no 4x12 sorry :lame: but that old Bogner still sounded great in the Pacific 1x12s; cool times, time flies!

I drool over this stuff, but the cable management part is like... yeah, no. Back to the Fractal.
Same. I just can’t execute the neat cable thing well. I haven’t gone digital yet, but even with pedalboards>tube amps with fx loops, I look at my cable situation and shake my head.

sweet! must’ve sounded killer.

Pacific Woodworks 1x12s were the 90s stereo rig cabs of choice for the astute LA players.

i had a chance to buy one but chose to get allan holdsworth’s old Pearce 1x12 EV cab instead because ALLAN plus it was lighter and more compact but still sounded great!

i normally rocked a pair of hughes and kettner widebody EV 1x12s with a unique velour textured shell.

Nice move, there's no substitute for proper tools :)

Yes that 100B Bogner rig was fantastic, actually preferred the way that Bogner sounded through the Pacific 1x12 "cubes" as dry cabs VS my old 60's Marshall 4x12. The Pacific have old V30 and are some of the very best 1x12s I've ever played; love them.
Mixed with the 2x12 Park columns (with old Greenbacks) that made for a huge sounding yet still quite compact rig.
Should have kept that Bogner!:LOL:

you’ve always had high quality rigs i’ve admired!

my next round of tone tweaking will involve swapping out the v30 and gh30 in my 1x12s with the warehouse invader 50 and et65 i pulled out of my 4x12.

the chinese v30 orange 1x12 cab i bought always sounded too dark/muted with that speaker so i hope the invader livens things up.

my friend had a bogner open back 1x12 cube with a v30 and i’ve never heard that speaker sound better! another guy i mixed sound for had a bogner shiva head on a matching 2x12 v30 open back cab and that was the second best v30 cab i’ve ever heard.

reinhold really knows how to make those speakers shine!

Thanks for the kind words.
Yes, Bogner & good ol' V30 really seem to like each other! Mixing them with some greenbacks to taste makes for a really great balanced vintage/modern sound IMHO.
V30 in open backs are great; I'd bet a good bunch of classic Fender combos were actually recorded with those since the (late) 80's :)

Yes, Guitarpoint is a nice store; pricey but nice :)
One of the employees there has been a long time LPF member especially (Fred); cool people.

I'd take that '69 Burgundy 345 myself please :inlove:

after my last go round of cable building i ordered one of these and a better variable soldering station to make my world much more pleasant moving forward!

I need that in my life! The Amazon special I’ve had for years with the little magnifying glass has seen better days.

My soldering iron is decent, but nothing special and getting older too.

Does that clip platform you have lend itself well to smaller work too, like populating a circuit board?

What a rig! I am really excited about the Friedman IR load which should hit the stores later this year. It has a stereo power amp so thinking about swapping my Suhr Reactive Load IR to it and buying another 1x12 for a stereo setup. Then Eventide and Lexicon rack units… Would be amazing if Eventide made a successor to the eclipse in 1U format with better display, more power etc.

i’m sure the one i have would as long as the board isn’t too big for the magnetic base gooseneck arms/alligator clips to secure to the perimeter of the board.

my tele pickguard is about as wide as the arms reach on my station, but i could use a second station like the old one i already have to expand that area further.

i’d like to hear and play through the Friedman.

one feature of my rig that has proven itself to be invaluable is also the cheapest part of the equation.

that little LED light strip which i’ve attached to the perimeter of the back of the rack(s) is connected to one of the “always on” outlets in my top power supply. a toggle switch hangs off the outside of the rack and illuminates all the connections with a click.

even with the rig on, zero noise and SOOOOO handy!

my only conundrum now is that the intricate patch points on the back of the rig—the gcx and rack interface—sit physically low in the rig. in a perfect world they would be in the upper rack so when i spin the rig around those units/connections would be at eye level while sitting to work on stuff.

my buddy took this to heart and suspended his 22(?) sp studio rack from the ceiling on a rotating mount!

i hope these tips are useful for the aspiring rack aficionado🔥💡

I'll second putting lights in the back, too. Just makes it so much easier to see what's going on back there.

Not sure I'd go so far as hanging a rack from the ceiling but definitely understand the point.

The good thing is that, once it's all wired up, there's not much to do until you want to change something. For me, that's way too often, but that's part of the fun.

the tweak continues…

after being on the compressor ferris wheel for a while, i got my old rocktron 300 G back from a friend

IMG_3741.jpeg

the RNC comp and the Cali 76 stacked both exhibited some faint input clipping which was driving me nuts!

the 300G handles hotter line input like a champ, sound great (preserves highs better than dbx 160) has a built in hush to silence any tail end hiss nicely,
and being a rocktron product, i am able to power it with a small 2.5 mm barrel connector from one of the available power station taps.

if the predecessor 300 was good enough for EVH…(even if rarely used😁)
