Cool read! Thanks!

Sounds like Tom is a super cool dude  Too bad his guitars are 3 times the amount I can afford because I'd love to have one :aww:

I have to admit that I love to custom spec, order and wait with anticipation for one of his guitars. My fourth just went through paint last week and should deliver in 3 weeks. I'm stoked. He is currently moving his shop to a bigger facility. The current one is too small for comfort.

If I spent $12,000 on guitars I'd have to find a new place to live :gethim: ....either that or I'd be dead ;)

Guess I'll stick with my Musicman's :D

EB Family Reserve = $3000

If I remember correctly, Vai also used a Tom Anderson on the majority of Passion & Warfare. Probably the same guitar.

I wonder what would have happened to TA if Vai went with him in regards to both parties?

Vai's design pretty much made the RG which I believe is the 2nd most sold guitar in history next to the strat. before Vai Ibanez was at a cross roads with uncertain times ahead. No artist had the impact Vai had back in 1987 when the JEM came out.

TA did not have the capital at that time but his entire business model could have changed for better or for worse. In the end shops like TA's could not substain that kind of growth, at one point Hamer had many of the big guns with their guitars but just did not have the capital to keep them.

Loyality is a fickle bitch.

+1

I have spoken to Tom on a few occasions. Easily one of my favorite people...period. I would add that he is totally fine with his organization (size, production output). He is all about quality control and comfort in making his guitars. How can you not like the man? I think it is cool that the way this story went down doesn't affect his opinion of the the people involved. He knows it's just how things go sometimes and that everything reciprocates in the end.
The guy is as good as they come. He's been a tremendous help to me in the past with my Rand guitars and providing info and original wiring schematics (Rand Guitars were built in Tom's shop). He is without equal when it comes to helping his customers and answering questions. Just a few years back he had planned to do away with his current business and just focus on building a very limited number of guitars by himself...he changed his mind in part when it sunk in that he would be putting a lot of his employees out of work, not to mention the huge outcry from his customers. Just a good dude, period.

Cool story and yes, Tom is a great guy. He's always on the Anderson forum helping out anyone who asks.

Here's the guitar that Tom was discussing:

IIRC, it was used to record most of the solos on the "Skyscraper" album.
Wow, I love that.

That was a great story. Tom Anderson makes the best guitars in the business in my opinion. I haven't had the chance to meet him personally but everyone I have talked to that has always says the same thing-he's a great guy and sincere.

Tom and Roy are very cool. Cool enough that ( after begging Roy just a bit) they made me a pro am just like that in 1999. It had the current Anderson headstock, Anderson pickups, and no handle. The graphics were painted by Dan Lawrence, I paid him seperately. I sold it and always kind of wished I kept it.
