Considering a Marshall 2203X ............

Woops, saw that the OP got his reissue. All good then but for the rest of you lot, no shame in grabbing yourself a "wang" :P .

Ehhh, why settle for 80% of the real Marshall sound.

Buy once, buy right.

If you are OK with almost a Marshall, there are so many options.
I probably would have built one myself .... if I didn't buy a real one .
I've been building pedals and working on amps for years now ... but haven't attempted a full on amp build yet .
I kind of had a 1000 dollar off coupon ( sold a amp over the weekend for a grand that cost me absolutely zero bucks ) so ... in essence ... I only paid 1200 for the 2203X ..... not a bad score in my mind ... and now I'll have an original ... for reference .... or to use as a donner somewhere down the line ... most likely I will do the mods myself .... we shall see

Hope you dig the 2203x. I've played some that sounded great. Effects loop is a bonus.
No shame in hitting the front end with a boost for the heavies, singing sustain, awesomeness.
The low input is highly underrated, imo, and is a great platform for pedals. Fuzz pedals sound glorious here.

Finding a good used JCM or JMP for a decent price is difficult these days. Like anything else I guess.
You could grab something like this if the 2203x doesn't trip your trigger:

to me the difference is about the same as one vintage 800 to another. My 800 is a bit of a dog until it gets up there. My clone kills it. I bet I could make one of these WANG's sound as good as any 800. A couple of key tweaks and it is instantly a winner.

I hear what you are saying, especially if you are drowning it with distortion pedals anyway.

But, playing louder and cleaner, nothing sounds and thumps, like that Marshall iron.

I almost traded into a King Kong a few months ago ....

Well yeah, the trannies always make the ultimate difference but think about it, an output transformer is going to be a few hundred bucks and you could upgrade it easily enough. But that said I get it. You want the real deal if you can get it. Also a better investment in terms of value.

Will Marshall sell you OE transformers?

What?? For such a simple circuit? That's like BOOOOteek prices. I would 100% Get a Ceriatone and have someone put a zero loss FX loop in it. To think I got my 800 combo for 800$ CAD years back. Stupid.

I would also challenge you even further to try out one of the WANG's 2204. It's the same circuit. Sure you can question the transformers but you are going to play this thing loud and kick it in the nuts with an OD. Tell me this doesn't sound good. Also handwired?? You can get in and swap a few minor parts and you too can end up with one of the best sounding 2204/JMP style amps ever! ( my rewired Laney to 2204 is exactly that, killer)

Yeah, they're not the same.

op, when you get the amp, open it up and check that the bright cap is there and its stock 100 percent.. otherwise you will not be getting the gain, presence, bight and snap needed to sound good when cranked. just a thought as people love to mutilate these things to make them "brown" bro lol

Agreed. A clone is an amp that sounds similar...but not the same. If you want a Marshall....just buy the real deal.

The wangs sounded better in that clip. Honestly guys, I don't agree... Good iron can be found in various places and if you use good caps and resistors, it's going to compete. " better" comes down to opinion and how all the parts sound together in a particular amp.

Thank you so much for buying that. I had it in my cart three separate times last night.
I've been oogling over it since they put it up ..... I thought someone was going to grab it right away ....
