Control room/Studio build progress pictures!

Hi everyone,

I finally began my studio build after months of prep, and getting all the materials and pieces of the puzzle put together. This was a build designed by Roger Darcy , a legendary studio designer from the UK who has done over 1200 studio builds I believe in 35+ years. He is a co author on “ RA: The Book”, a highly regarded book in the world of studio design.

The build is not yet complete, however I have as much done as I can until the large 5’x4’ diffusion panels and the Slat wall is built, which will be done in a few weeks. There will be 3 large diffusion panels on the ceiling, one at each wall the monitors Are firing at, and one directly in front of my desk. The slat wall will be going in the very back of the room, floor to ceiling. I’ve ran out of the barrier matting I need for the last 2 ceiling membranes, but that should be taken care of in a week or two As well. Anyways, just wanted to share some progress pictures for anyone interested. Thank you!

Very slick looking. You’ve got lots of good absorption, nice amount of space too. Looks like new construction?

Thanks man! Yes, new construction, this is one of my upstairs bonus rooms in my home. Later this summer I’m going to go out through the wall by the big window, down the side of the house and underground with mic cables and speaker cables to a shed that I’m building on the side that will house all of my 4x12s. Then I will control everything via a Dynamount from the control room, should be great when it’s done.

How long before you are 100% ITB and mixing on headphones?? 😜

Space looks great though. Like the color of the fabric for your panels. Rustic yet classy theme going on.

Haha probably sooner rather than later! I don’t use “much” outboard stuff, mostly just the ssl buss comp and the sontec eq on the mix buss. Or I’ll use the other GML 500 series clone on the mics when dialing in tones, that seems to be great as well.

As far as the fabric, that’s actually the most “special” part of this build. It’s a barrier matting material called revac BM1060, and it’s only available in the UK. All of Rogers builds have called for this, because as far as him and his team is concerned, there is literally no other alternative for controlling low end under 100hz. And I can tell you already it’s an astonishing difference. I’m talking .5 db changes at 50hz are clearly audible now, pretty amazing stuff. There are other ways to accomplish the same thing this is not the only way, but this is what Rogers rooms call for, and quite frankly his control rooms are the best I’ve ever heard, so I’m not gonna question it!

I started with the wooden 2x6 frames that I screwed into the wall. Of course nothing is perfect, and the walls bow, the wood is never straight etc. so you then apply silicone to the inside of box around the edges, AND the outside. Then, 4 inch thick mineral wool for the absorption. I then took plumbing strap to keep the mineral wool in place to leave a 2 inch air gap between the barrier matting on the outside and the rockwool. A true “limp mass membrane” basically. The,n, silicone again on the outside front of the boxes, the revac is then placed on the front of it held in place by silicone, and then stapled in place. They must be absolutely air tight for them to work properly, and they are for sure. The air trapped in them is never getting out for sure haha.

That's cool! Same setup as Mark Lewis!

I hate to show you up, but your studio is like Kmart compared to mine. PM me for advice.

Awesome man, hope it goes well. Roger is a legend so I'm sure it'll sound great!

Thanks zen. Glad to see someone here is familiar with Roger. The guy is just the best in the world as far as I’m concerned. I encourage anyone interested in studio design to get the kindle version of “ RA: The Book”. I have never seen such amazing facilities in my life, nor did I know they existed. Absolutely amazing.
