Saw this while reading up on James Iha from Smashing Pumpkins. Looked into it a little online, seems cool. Always really dug their tone.

I really want to get into Fuzz style stuff. I've always loved that violin like sound Eric Johnson gets, and Smashing Pumpkins sound on Siamese Dream.

I do know a Big Muff was employed in a lot of Corgan's guitar work on that particular album...

Oh yeah, Big Muff Pi I think. Just curious on the CD, as I've never heard of it before.

I read they used Op amp muffs, fender tone benders and rats in the studio. Marshall JMP-1s on the road

Also I built a 79 op amp big muff clone a while ago to go for that tone as well. It is Siamese dreams in a box for real

EDIT: it was a 77'

Yeah, it's an OpAmp Big Muff in the studio for Siamese Dream. Didn't use them live, they were "too thin". JCM800 with KT88's and a JMP-1, MP-1, MP-2, and a Triaxis into a Mesa Strategy power amp if I remember right. Most of the Siamese Dream sound comes from having up to 8 layers of fuzz'ed guitar tracks per song.

I'd live to set up a new rig. A Fender or Vox, and a bunch of pedals.

The Creamy Dreamer mod is fairly simple to do. It's not necessarily what they used on the albums, Corgan has admitted that he's not sure where that rumor came from. The actual story is 'supposedly' that someone developed the mod, showed it to Corgan, and he was like 'cool', then the guy who developed it told everyone that it was 'Corgan's favorite pedal' and all this, to which he denied later. The mod just increases the gain in a few different places. 4-5 components altogether.

Yeah, I knew that whole story. I was just interested in the pedal, as I'd not ever hears of it outside of that whole deal.

So it's really just a handful of part swaps, eh Jake? That's interesting. Thanks for the info.

Now that I really think about it, I've not been impressed by any "metal" tone in a LONG time. It's really been a handful of my favorite player's tone from the past 10 years or so. Eric Johnson's clean and lead sound. I love his clean tone. Dean DeLeo's sound on Purple. Siamese Dream too. Also been digging on the Vox AC15 clean and gain sounds for a long time now.

I love the lead guitar sound that comes in around 3:00 into "Rocket" on Siamese Dream. Fuzzy to the max.

DUDE!!!!! :D

One of my fave tracks off that release!! LOVE IT!!!!

'Zero' off of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is another wickedly fuzzed out track... Cherub Rock, another classic. Damn, ya, Corgan had it down... :2thumbsup:

Yeah, Rocket is a great tune. The back half of Simese Dream is just surreal IMO. Geek U.S.A, Mayonaise, Silverfuck, and Luna are great tunes.

I also really like the end of "Hummer", and the track "Soma".

Love the pumpkins sound...never tried to chase it though. good luck.
I'll be watching this thread for RESULTS!!!!! :D

You'll be waiting a LONG time, haha. I have about $250 dollars to my name, and want so much gear on top of the 100 other things I need to get worked out.

I want a AC15 or Fender combo of some sort to A/B with my Mesa for cleans, and a big pedalboard to run with the combo for different tones and a small traveling rig. A couple OD's, a fuzz, chorus, flanger, usual stuff.

You know, everything about Siamese Dream says it was recorded with a KT-88 loaded JCM 800 with the silver Big Muff, but the cleans don't sound like that amp to me. I get more of a Fender vibe from them, not a British flavor. I could be wrong though, I am known to be an idiot .

They're using Devi Ever fuzzes now, the Shoegazer I think. Great pedals from a local gal here.

This thread makes me want to buy another Muff to do the Creamy Dreamer mod to.
