His point is quite a bit skewed though....if you think that shows like American Idol, the Voice, Xfactor are hurting music I think you are wrong....I think the fact that you have a show that is showing that if you can truly sing you can still be successful...its all unknown artists that are finding success...granted they arent singing music I typically enjoy but if you think the contestants havent been singing their asses off well before getting on the show (or at least 90 percent of them) I think you are mistaken....especially The Voice...it uses a KILLER Band, the one from Rockstar INXS and Supernova...2 shows which I am sure DG would down talk also but was nothing but working musicians trying it make it big. Anything on mainstream television that is based on music really isnt hurting music....what is hurting music is the fact that when I take my kids to see Heart and Jason Bonham Led Zeppelin Experience and buy lawn tickets and we get there and are given premium seats because they didnt sell enough tickets to even fill the seats, let alone the lawn....but if you try to get a ticket to see Miley Cyrus shaking her ass wearing shorts so tight it gives new meaning to "lip syncing" its standing room only for 3 counties....
As a father of 4 teenage daughters I can tell you I would rather my kid be watching these Pop music shows on TV than ANYTHING on MTV at the moment....they do interviews of the contestants where they talk about how much hard work they have had to do to get to the point they are at in life right now....and its something I can point to and say..."See, its not just something that gets handed to you on a silver platter, ANY type of success at ALL comes from some type of hard work...you HAVE to do the time before anything else good can happen..."
THe dumbing down of music is our fault as parents more than anything else....introduce your kids to good music and they will appreciate it....
The mere fact that musicians today have access to be able to record and create such stellar music yet there is very little in way of cutting edge making its way to the mainstream is just bewildering to me....imagine if jimi Hendrix or SRV had access to modeling amps, recording software, or the tons and tons of gear and all the stuff available today to be able to get their music out there....the 60's, 70's, and 80's would have been COMPLETELY different (and so would Dave Grohl and Nirvana I would bet)...I just cant begin to imagine....
